Discussion:
Kiting Gluth as a hunter

Hi guys,

despite all my protests (hey, I'm here to make damage ;-), I've been
assigned the task to kite the zombie adds in the Gluth encounter. I had
a horrible time at first, but after several tries I think I got the hang
of it. However, we still didn't kill the boss (best attempt was 16%).

I got help from our Shaman dropping an Earthbind Totem and the mage's
Frost Nova from time to time and of course my own frost trap (by the
way, did they change the graphical effect? this was not in the patch
notes iirc). Kiting works well as long as I can keep the zombies at
distance; *if* they get close to me and hit me, the daze effect they
apply is very bad, because the many of them will put their stacking
debuff on me that increases damage taken so at some point healing will
become impossible.

The other problem is keeping the aggro - those zombies all too often
head towards the healers, the resto druid in special. As I'm constantly
running, I can only use instant shots. In my current build, there's only
arcane shot (6 sec. cd), serpent sting (dot, no cd) and distracting shot
(8 sec. cd). Of course there's concussive shot which I'm using, but that
doesn't do damage and thus no aggro. If I'm far away, I'll put in a
multi-shot or even a volley if the mage has FNed the zombies.

Should I be using aspect of the cheetah? Would make me run faster, but
add even more daze if they hit me.

Any other tips?

Thanks in advance!

on 10 man naxx this is what we do.

I am a frost mage, with the ice barrirer shatter tallent. This frost
nova's when my ice barrier breaks.

1 hunter and me kite the adds. the hunter does as you say (without
AotC) I help with using Cone of Cold on the zombies which slows them
down. I also use my elemental nova to freeze them. With my nova, and
my ice barrier shatter they are controlled very well.

Hunter kites round. Any that get away I nova and the hunter can get
agro on. If no I can Fire Blast them and get agro.
Nova, Cone of Cold, Nova, Ice Trap they are kept together,

Then on Devistate, Nova them 1 more time, and AoE them Down. Nova-ing
any that escape.

Any other mage in the party helps out with the occasional nova if they
can, or the druids root to help too.

Good advice, but note that they move a LOT faster in 25 man naxx, and
there's more of them. We use paladins as tanks because they can load up a
lot of aggro on the chow, with deathknights to yank back stragglers, and
mages and hunters for freezing. It's a fairly nasty job. *

I would not use aspect of the cheetah, but you could try and use disengage
from time to time. as for aggro i'd probably try and use the trap cd for
explosive trap, since you have a shaman providing slow totem for you. shoot
single ghouls, multi or ae groups.

but a hunter is not the best choice to kite them (your protest has actually
a good reason i think) supporting someone who does have to kite with frost
traps (like a deathknight or paladin or warrior) is however more your job.

indeed the hunter may not be the best choice. but we didn't have a
pally or dk to use one time and went with the hunter mage combo, and
that worked so well we stuck with that from then on.

If you have a priest, try to get them to keep up shield on you - that
should help prevent dazing should the mobs get too close.

Also if you don't already do it, have a healer dedicated to healing the
kiters - we found ours lived a lot longer when one of our healers
followed them to the far side of the room while the other 2 stayed with
the tanks by Gluth (previously the healers would have to run back and
forth because the kiter rarely comes in heal range of us if we're
staying in range of the tanks)
