Discussion:
recommended US server?

After several months AWOL I'm about to rejoin the WOW universe, and am
looking for a US server to join that is above average for social
environment (if that's even an option :) ). I'm loath to abandon my old
chars (including two lvl 60's) but the interminable adolescence on that
particular server was tough to hang with. Any recommendations?

Also, anyone with experience with multiple types of servers have any
strong opinions on the sorts of players attracted to RP vs PVE vs PVP?

I'm not trying to be a pessimist, but I think you're screwed.

I've played on all 3 realm types, both factions, and you get a fair
share of asshats everywhere. The only way to avoid it is to turn off
the General channel for good. I even keep my Guild channel on a
separate tab because the conversations all start to sound like Beavis &
Butthead outtakes after a while.

One guild I joined even claimed they were all "mature" players. The
illusion was smashed the first time I actually heard the other players
on Teamspeak. Every one of these "mature" players was under 23 and
sounded like a character from a Kevin Smith movie (Clerks / Mall Rats).
Mature players in my opinion don't say thinks like "Yeah, I hate
Alliance. Pally's are SO totally gay".

I'd love joining a group, turning on Teamspeak and hearing "... yeah, I
agree. No-Load is definitely the way to go if your gonna put your Keogh
in a Mutual Fund". I'd probably think I was hallucinating though.

Lol! Honest pessimism >> fake optimism. I appreciate the good feedback.

Identical experience on this end. My guild was forcing teamspeak for
the lvl 55+ instances (with good reason) and that's when it really
dawned on me that the age 12 to 22 crowd was 95% of everyone out there.
Some were cool of course, but they were exceptions. I guess it's just a
reality of who has the interest and time to invest in a game like this.

I was hoping there'd be a huge "age 25+" guild on some server out there,
but maybe I'm out of luck. Too bad Blizzard doesn't a few servers
labeled "old fogies" in the selection menu to server as a magnet for us
greybeards instead of spreading us all over. :)

If you create characters on Emerald Dream, feel free to look me up (use
the list of characters I posted earlier). I and some friends and family
have created several guilds. The size of the largest guild (Templars of
Hyjal) is around 30 members; the age range is early 20s to late 60s,
with more of us over 30 than under.

The guild structure is very informal; we mostly use it as a way to
arrange group activities and sahre knowledge and resources. There is a
lot of soloing, and small-group activity (2s and 3s), and also a few
regular activies for full parties. We aniticpate eventually we'll set up
some regular activities for larger groups. Recently I proposed the idea
of an all-druid 5-man team, and there has been enough interest that it
looks like we may end up with two such teams (maybe even 3!).

I think you're just unlucky. I've been in two guilds, (the first was
"absorbed" by the second, and in both guilds the average age was/is
around 30. (as always I'm on the average)

In the new guild (generally 15-25 people on line at a time with about 80
members) there are a few under-21's, and a few over forties, but the
bulk of the group is between 25 and 35.

I don't know if this is typical of our server (EU-FR RP PVE server) or
of the greater european population, or the RP servers or what...

Just check the realm forums and see how active they are and what people
are saying.

After you realise that all servers are full of asshats and elitists and
crybabies, roll on one of the new servers that's coming out for
christmas.

It so happens that the subject came up in another thread. Both Paul
Vader and I play Alliance on Emerald Dream, and we both think the
community there is very good in general.

Another poster plays Horde on Emerald Dream and is not having as good an
experience. (That is not a claim that Alliance is in any way better than
Horde; I also play Horde on other servers and like that faction just as
much.)

Emerald Dream is an RPPVP server. As I wrote elsewhere, some server
communities are nicer than others; I'm not sure whether it has anything
to do with faction or realm type. I will say that Alliance-side Emerald
Dream is my favorite community, and I've played in about 9 or 10 of them.

If you decide to join us, welcome aboard.

Emerald Dream:

Quatherine 28 Gnome Rogue
Gyrus 27 Gnome Mage
Glindy 24 Gnome Warrior
Malvin 23 Gnome Warlock
Ivanian 22 Night Elf Druid

Borgrim 21 Dwarf Paladin
Skorzeny 6 Human Priest

Thanks for the tip! I might well take your advice and drag a few
friends along with me (newbies with Xmas WOW gifts). I also like the
idea that the Horde on Emerald Dream are testy cranks... maybe it'll
make the Good vs Evil RP aspect more substantial, and it'll be more fun
to kill em.

:-)

There is never a shortage of jackasses, and you will find them on the
Alliance side on Emerald Dream too, of course. And, as I said, there are
Horde players on Emerald Dream that I salute when I see them.

But what I like about the Horde on Emerald Dream is that they are
aggressive, which gives me lots of fights to get into. :-)

Are they ever! Totally by accident, I found today that my warlock has a
rank. It was entirely based on the ganking party I was talking about in
another post - 3 of my 25 kills last week involved one spell and a binding
circle of fire elementals (evil grin). All the rest were self-defense. *

Give Alliance Maelstrom a try. (RP-PVP).

Notice how many people have recommended RP-PVP servers? They're great.
I'm on Twisting Nether and I like it better than any other server I've
played on, which is a lot of 'em.

Yes! agree. Even if you don't RP (although you shouldn't be anti-RP),
RP* servers have better communities. And PvE servers are just too
boring IMO. Killing NPC's becomes routine. But when that enemy player
is charging you--no matter how good you are--you really never know what
to expect. And WoW is an easy enough PvE game that even if you spend a
lot of time PK'ing and/or PK'ed, level 60 will still seem right around
the bend.

When they introduced RP-PVP servers, I left my epic level 60 character
and re-rolled. No regrets.
