Soloing ICC

I thought I'd finished the rep grind for ICC, but I still have about 8K
to go, so I went in and killed everything up to the ship.

I could *NOT* solo that. I saw some comments about doing it, but none of
the instructions seemed to work. For starters, they all said that after
the mage appears on the other ship, use the rocket pack to go over, but
I cannot use it because I am in combat.

Ideas?

Or should I just clear up to the ship for the next month or two?

the rockets should work in combat. I always have them on an extra spellbar for quick access. But the hard thing is also to not let your own ship die!

Every time I tried to click the rocket nothing happened and I get a red
error "You are in combat"

The rocket pack is a shirt. Equip it *before* entering combat, then
drag it to your actionbar and it'll work whenever you like. But it's
like any other bit of armor, can't be equipped in combat, so has to be
equipped first. That threw me the first time I went there too,
confusing!

I managed to solo the whole place the other day, but I had an alt
tagging along on follow, so used the alt to do the guns and main to
jump over for the mages - however, main couldn't survive being beaten
up by Muradin very well, so I found I was always jumping back anyway,
so might as well have just used one character!

Most bosses are relatively simple to solo, but if you can't heal you
won't manage Valithria lol (the objective is to heal the dragon to
full health!), and Blood Queen is a headache, since you have a hard
timer after which you get MC'd, so either need good dps, or to have an
alt along that you can bite to prevent the MC. I had her on about 5%
when I got bitten, luckily I had the alt! A proper dps class should be
alright though, I was on a disc priest, decent dps but not exactly dps
spec levels.

Well, I cannot heal at all and can't bring an alt, so Valithria is right
out. I could never do all the bosses in AQ because one required frost
damage.

There are some weapons which do additional frost dmg on hit, sold by a
vendor in Storm Peaks: www.wowhead.com/npc=30006 - I usually equipped
one on my druid for that boss and it worked alright, though it's still
a total pain in the neck even with that!

I think I made more progress before the rocket shirt. Never got the
other ship down less than 50%. I'll have to reread the strat. One
problem is that my pet doesn't move with me when I jump, just sits there
on the other ship.

Ack. Pets can be a right nuisance! The way I do it, which may not be
optimal, but worked for me, is:

Jump in cannon before your each the other ship, shoot like hell till
it gets frozen and you get ejected. (Try to unleash bigger 2nd attacks
where possible but also try not to waste built-up energy when you do
get frozen, timing a medium hit before the end is better than none at
all)

Rocket over to other ship, while flying target nearest mage, unleash
instant attacks, with luck it'll die before you land.

Nuke other two mages, if I can take them down in 2-3 casts as a healer
spec I'd assume you should be fine. Ignore Muradin (or the horde
equivalent if you're ally), aiming to land at range from the mages
helps as by the time he reaches you you'll be leaving again.

Jump back, get in cannon and start shooting again.

Sometimes I stop and clear out some of the mobs on my own deck, and
where possible, I try to knock out some of the riflemen on the other
ship, as I *think* it's them that are damaging my ship, but time is of
the essence so I rarely get more than 1-2 of them down, just hit them
with instants as I'm flying back and hope for the best. I've only done
it solo once, and that took a couple of attempts, first time I was
there I was duoing which took several tries to get the hang of it,
you'll likely get it with a few more goes :-)

Rather confused now, this worked just fine when I had my DK along for
the ride, but doesn't work at all solo, and I don't really understand
why, unless it's because the mobs on my ship are too busy beating up
whatever character is sat afk on the decking to set it on fire, maybe.
I'll take an alt along next time and see if I can beat it, since it is
not happening solo, that's for sure.

Sounds like you didn't equip the rocket pack beforehand. It goes in the
shirt slot if i recall correctly, which does count as armor, and you can't
swap armor during combat.
