Discussion:
5.4 - Timeless Island & epic quest line...

Well -

Spent a few hours last night on the new patch...Maybe it's me - Maybe
I've just about had my run with this game....I dunno. Nothing grabbed
me as "cool!". Anyway, to say the place was a clusterf!@k would be an
understatement when I logged on. There is a basic quest that gets you
to the Timeless Island, however unlike last patches it doesn't appear
when you log in unless you are in pandaria. If you log in in Org or SW
for example, it seems like any other day. Anyway, once you get to the
island, there is only a quest or two to get you going and off you go on
grinding.... coins, coins, coins - esp if you are on the epic
quest-line....and it's a pain in the ass trying to nab mobs when the
whole realm, and 3 other realms are there grinding the same, but what
else is new. Not too much different than the 5.2 island with that
regards I guess, except the island is a lot smaller, and the quests are not
"structured" as they were in previous patches. I will mention that one
of the quests is frickin' asininely (if that's a word) stupid. There
are a bunch of "lost spirit" stone things about the island. (forgive me
- can't remember the quest line name, and can't get on the net right
now) You have to simply find one and right click it to finish the
quest...Super easy - *except* there are only about 15ish of these
things, they can only be clicked on by one person at a time, and they
have to recharge for 10 minutes before they can be clicked on again. Oh
the camping that was going on last night!! Feel sorry for those on a
large pop realm (mines medium), mixed with other realms....I was a
cowboy last night, in that I had won a quick draw against two hordie's
who crashed my camping. I had found one empty, and set up camp. I
probably would have rage quit last night after sitting 8 minutes looking
at this rock waiting for it to be ready... :)

There is a bunch to do on the island, but for the legendary quest-line
you have to get 5K of coins which wasn't too terrible as you get a bunch
for quests, not just killing mobs. The next is you have to beat all 4
of the world bosses (the 4 celestial)...again, not so bad but had a hard
time getting in groups for it. I'm not sure exactly how the tagging is
working. I do know that when the opposite faction is engaged the fight
gets phased. All 4 fight in an arena type square, and only 1 boss can
be engaged at a time. Meaning, that if the Horde is fighting the Ox,
another group has to wait until they are done before engaging / tagging
another. The phasing of faction fights seems a good idea after the
griefing that was happening in the against the lighting dragon on the
Thunder island. I'm not sure, however if you can just go in and tag a
boss if your faction is fighting. I only got the crane boss done last
night. Anyway, one you get all 4 down and you 5K of coins, you upgrade
from your ilevel 600 cloak to a....umm ilevel 600 cloak. This time
however, it's the orange/rust colored named legendary cloak, not a
purple. (This cloak BTW cannot be transmogged - just FYI)

Here's the part I really think is going to be an issue.... Once you get
this cloak, and *only* if you have this cloak, can you get across a
broken bridge to the center of the island where you need to defeat
another world boss. So basically, you need to get 25+ players of
correct types (tanks, heals, etc) that *all* have the legendary cloak!
In the time I was on, there was only one group that ran it and it took
them about a hour or so to form a group together that was strong enough
to down him after several wipes. I unfortunately wasn't able to get in
on the group as I haven't finished the other 3 to get my cloak. After
you down him however, I think you get a quest to kill Thrall in the last
of the raids. Anyway, this may be an issue if you don't get to this
boss in the first week or so, if there's not enough of a draw or reason
to come back to him. I'm not sure if Bliz just has it set up this way
for now for exclusivity to legendary quest-line seekers, and have plans
to allow all to participate later...we shall see.

All in all, not thrilled...just meh...

It looks fun but nothing amazing to me, not that I've done a lot yet,
decided to avoid the crowding and wait a few days for most of it!

Not a fan of the lack of structure idea myself, but maybe if everyone
hates it they'll realise that bitching like hell about dailies was a
bad idea... I *like* dailies myself, at least it gives some direction
beyond mindless farming.

Being fair, some of the cool stuff to find on the island sounds like
fun, BUT... I'm on a very high pop server. I'll never see any of it
due to overcamping unless I just don't sleep one night and explore at
4am.

There's me warned that that quest will be impossible on my server
then... on the plus side, ones like that do tend to get nerfed
(eventually) if there's enough complaints, even that stupid Compy
Stomp on Isle of Thunder eventually got fixed, and apparently only the
really high pop servers had any issue (the forums thread was a lot of
my server's Horde complaining bitterly, a couple of Silvermoon
Alliance doing the same and everyone else saying "what are you
complaining about?" - seemingly it was fine except for the very high
pop one-sided servers, go figure).

I like the idea of the faction phasing! I expect tagging works like
usual, hit it while your faction is fighting it and you get credit; at
least, so I've heard. I'll probably hang out over there shortly and
see how it goes, with my server's Horde bias I shouldn't have to wait
long :-P The 5k coins will be the hard bit, I reckon, since everybody
will be trying to get their cloak today... I think I may hold off and
try Proving Grounds instead!

The worldboss which only has cloak access will be run all the time, as
it drops higher lvl gear than most of us can get (equivalent to
warforged normal SoO I think, something like that), so it'll be very
worth running for everyone except heroic raiders, and even they'll
likely want a go to pad out missing slots. May take a little while for
enough people to get caught up to make it easy to run, but I imagine
2-3 weeks in he'll be run relatively often, unless you're on a tiny
population server that can't get enough people together (and merged
servers should be active soon enough anyway).

Just tried a boss, easy enough - walk into the bosses' area when it
looks like a group's engaging, hit boss, you get credit :-) No idea
how hard Niuzao is meant to be but he kinda died without doing
anything as the whole island is lagged to hell on my server right now,
can't do a thing without a 5 sec delay... oh well, got me a pair of
522 pvp gloves (shame I had 522 pve ones but I guess if I get round to
pvp sometime it'll be handy!)

The timeless armor tokens are very nice for gearing up alts. I noticed
that I usually got armor tokens that matched the type of armor I was
wearing, but a few times I did not (i.e. leather helm on a DK.)

Is this random?

Seems to be....I did seem to get mostly cloth on my mage, but I did also
get a few pcs. of mail, and maybe one plate pc.

I ended up getting a lot of duplicate items...Think I got 3 cloth helms
(or headgear...not sure a clothies headpiece can be called a
"helm"....maybe "hat") :)

I put 1 of each into my void storage for future use and vendored the
duplicates....

This'll be where me having 21 alts on the same realm is useful ;-)
Should take me a little while to run out of alts to send stuff to
lol... even if most don't get used for ages, it'll still be ok as
levelling gear, I'd imagine. Certainly last time out, initital
levelling greens were (slightly) lower than LFR from the Deathwing
raid, so I'd guess these epics will be ok for levelling next
expansion, if I don't get the characters up to 90 to use them in this
one.

I've had a fistful of epic BOA items drop, but they all drop as mail

Yeah, now I've had a run around, I've got a ton of cloth, which isn't
so useful when my next two alts are a druid and a shaman. Got 2 plate
pieces though, so I suppose my paladin will be alright if/when I ever
level her...

FWIW if you are sure you are going to vendor them go ahead and "use"
them to create a piece. The vendor price for that created item is about
3x of the basic item.

I haven't noticed anything particularly different about the merged
realms. I am most curious about the impact on the AH.

I was off WoW for a good part of Pandaria so this patch came a bit
before I was ready. I hadn't done much of the previous legendary quest
line (none of the raid parts) so that is of little concern for me in 5.4.

I've gotten some nice BOA iLvl 496 upgrades so far from quest rewards,
helping to down rares and finding two "moss covered boxes." I've only
been to the Isle so far with 2 of my 6 90s. The first visit was my lock
who had skinning, and at least for now it is good to be a skinner. I had
some skinning competition but for the most part (this was early in the
afternoon after the patch came up) I kept busy. I probably got 200-300
of the coins needed for the 1000 for the quest by skinning.

My biggest frustration is with my professions. Even the web doesn't have
clear info on how to upgrade crafting professions. Turns out tailoring
you have to get a drop from a random mob to make Celestial cloth and
making those daily lets you learn other stuff. I have 2 tailors. The
first got its drop in the Eternal Blossoms zone despite many more kills
on the island. My other tailor has not gotten the drop yet. BTW, looks
like I will keep all my level 90 farmers (4) busy growing cloth to feed
my 2 tailors. I am still doing the imperial silk dailies on the 2
tailors to make royal satchel bags.

I am not sure what needs to be done for my Leaatherworking and
INscription. My toons with Jewelcrafting, engineering and blacksmithing
aren't even 90 yet.

They're not live yet, I believe, just regular CRZ. I'm expecting them
to show up in the coming days, or maybe next week, it'll give a little
time to iron out patch bugs before introducing this I guess.

Heh, you can skin coins? That's handy! The place was absolutely
covered in corpses when I arrived so a nice goldmine for any skinner,
shame mine isn't 90 yet.

JC didn't get anything new, as usual (guess what my main's profession
is *sigh*). Neither did alch (guess what my other 90 has...). I think
LW and Inscription are random drops, and one inscription recipe might
be buyable with coins. Doesn't affect me though since all my other
professions are on lvl 85s...

I also tried the new pet battle tournament on the island, and it's pretty
difficult. You have to beat three trainers and then four fabled beasts,
and you can't heal/resurrect your pets between battles (but you can swap
in fresh pets). I finally got past the third trainer but couldn't take
down the first beast.

(By the way, one of the trainers is the dwarf from the Jade Forest ally
questline and one of his pets is Socks, who is now an Undead raccoon.
I loved that small touch! Made me smile.)

Ahh, brilliant! Looking forward to seeing that, I loved that little
bit in Jade Forest :-)

Haven't tried the tournament myself, the island was such an enormous
lagfest I logged off after killing the Celestials for that quest, so
many people everywhere you can't even see the NPCs lol. And now
there's a 1300+ queue to get back in so I think I'll leave it a
while... ah, the joys of an overpopulated realm (we suddenly have a
free character migration opened today, can't imagine why.... :-P).
Sure the island will be fun either at 3am, or next week sometime ;-)

Beating my head off a brick wall on this one, have managed to get each
trainer down, but never succeeded in all 3 in the same run, sigh. I'm
off to level up some useful pets before trying again, have heard that
a worm type pet can solo Taran Zhu, which would be a big help, it's a
bit of a lottery whether I beat him using Creepy Crate+2 spiders but
that's all I've found that works at all out of what I have at lvl 25!

bit of a lottery whether I beat him using Creepy Crate+2 spiders but
that's all I've found that works at all out of what I have at lvl 25!
Argh... got all trainers and 3 of the celestials down, but mini Chi-Ji
outheals everything I throw at him. Now levelling some more pets with
Call Darkness (used my Scourged Whelpling up on Wrathion, and he was
the only one I had high lvl with that ability, oops...). Want to get
it done this week, before the trainers change round and I have to
level up some more pets to beat whatever next week's trainers are!

I tried to go in. I got the item to get to the island, teleported in...
and no quest to get 5k coins. Searched for 2 hours, did a few of the
other quests, searched again...

.. and decided: Fuck it. I'm done with the game. Logged out and
deleted my client. I'm through with the hamster wheel. My toons can
rot away now, gonna find something else to play.

This will be my last post here as well. As soon as it sends, deleting
the group from my list. Don't want any reminders of it anymore.

Bye.

ps. No, you can't have my stuff.

Well you do have to talk to Wrathion before going to the island, then
he's there when you get there.

A rather extreme reaction. Sounds like it was time for a break if it
winds you up that much.

I'm not aware of any quest that awards 5k coins and is immediately
available without doing any previous quests. I wonder why you thought
there was such a quest.

As someone else said, it sounds like quitting is the best thing for you.

Even at 2am that quest is impossible on my server, I'll try again in a
few days :-P
Post by IYM
Anyway, one you get all 4 down and you 5K of coins, you upgrade
from your ilevel 600 cloak to a....umm ilevel 600 cloak. This time
however, it's the orange/rust colored named legendary cloak, not a
purple. (This cloak BTW cannot be transmogged - just FYI)
And I now own a lovely orange cloak :-D That wing effect seems to go
off all the time even if I'm just hanging out in town, pretty cool.
Suspect they'll be everywhere soon, but right now I'm only seeing a
few, which is nice, feels good having something not everyone else does
yet!

lol - I hear you. Tuesday night I looked at a rock for 8 minutes.
Wouldn't you know it, last night as I'm riding through I come across a
rock that's charged without anyone around. Just when you *don't* need
it, it's there....kinda opposite of cleaning out your garage...

Gratz! Absolutely! -Got mine last night as well!

One side note - I was totally wrong on the faction phasing on the 4
celestial bosses. Not only is it *not* phased, but they need to do
something about the griefing. It was borderline rage quit time last
night. Took 3 hours to get a group through due to Horde PvP griefers.
The grief is that flagged Horde go into the fray when we would pull, and
get one of the 20+ people to hit them, which no matter how hard you
tried not to, someone would accidentally do it. Once that happens, they
attack that guy but not to kill him - but just enough that the healers
with their noses stuck in healbot would heal them, thereby flagging the
healers. They then would go all out and take our healers out, trying to
force a wipe. The other grief that was done: When we were about to
pull, one horde would pull and sacrifice themselves to cycle the bosses
off the one we needed. When we did 3 and only needed the Ox, as soon
as he came out, one would pull him and die making him disappear, and
cycling the next boss in. Then we would need one guy to sacrifice 3
times to rotate back to the Ox and have them do it again. Bliz needs
to address this....It was very infuriating. Griefing has been done
before on world bosses, but this has 4 in one arena that are cycled
through and only one at a time can be up, and only one faction can tag
him. This combined with the PvP quests/tokens to earn Blood spirits (?)
encourages the griefers....grrrrr (Although the mount you can buy from
the vendor does look cool)

Anyway, the wings that appear on the cloaks are very cool, but different
for each spec. The healers get ones that look more like the Crane, my
mage got ones that look like the serpent. My friend who tanked last
night got his with mine and he gets an Ox head that appears instead of
the wings. I haven't seen the melee dps tiger one yet.

After getting our cloaks, we went to check out the boss over the broken
bridge. LMAO! we got to the end of the bridge and when you get right
to the edge, you get floated over to the other side. The two of us took
out a couple of the mobs there just to check it out and get a look
inside, then decided to head back. We ran at the bridge expecting to
get floated over to the other side....except...no float in that
direction...There is however a sudden stop at the bottom. (Embarrassed
as a mage that I was in my off spec and my slow fall was in a different
spot and I couldn't find and click it fast enough! lol) We were in
vent laughing our asses off because I had enough time to yell
"SHIT!-SHIT!-SHIT!! - WHERE ***@ck" :)

Grats! Feels awesome to have a legendary that's actually current
content, I've never been able to dream of that before; they were
something for organised guilds only!

Ouch, that sounds crazy :-/ Hopefully the idiots will get bored soon,
thankfully was none of that when I did those bosses.

Yeah, seen a few serpents and one ox around, no tigers so far (haven't
noticed any cranes other than my own one tbh). Love the impact the
proc makes, I ran a couple of ToT LFRs this morning and it was 7-9% of
my healing done (I'm assuming "Spirit of Chi-Ji" is the resdistribute
overheals to people who need it proc, very useful one!)

shortly, maybe that'll be the one part of the island that's only
slightly overcrowded... :-P

Then they logon alli and do the same, just to stir everyone up.
Look at it this way, a kitten wasn't tortured that night.

Some games give pvp a repair cost or a battle fatigue exhaustion effect,
stops a lot of outright griefing - after a while.
Annoy enough people and the antagonist will be getting weaker just as they
get really ticked off.
You can still fight almost indefinitely, just needs ever more expensive
potions to keep going with ever decreasing returns.
It is even vaguely realistic .

WOW!!
did you feel that?
the sheer volume of QQ from that change pre-echoed back and snuffed the
entire timeline with that change out of existence!

No kitten torturing and not crying about it per-se, just was getting
frustrated by griefing as I was so close to getting my cloak I could
almost taste it, and I don't have a lot of playing time, to have a bunch
of numb-nuts in their Mom's basement mucking up my night... lol :)

It's why I play on a PvE realm...If I was into PvP, that would be
another issue. I could see those fights being absolutely laughably
*insane* on a PvP realm - holy crap! rofl!! The lag must also be
incredible!

But downing those bosses while having a huge PvP battle at the same time
must be incredibly satisfying - Enough where I would yell an audible
"YES!!"... I do PvP occasionally - just not that great at it on dps
(ok on heals) and like to keep the PvE/PvP separate from each other... :)
