I bought the expansion, and I have a "90" badge appearing
every time I start the game. I'm trying to figure out how
best to use it.

IIUC, any one toon can be bumped to 90. IFF they are over
60, their professions will be bumped to 600, not otherwise.

My two mains are:

A Destro Lock with Mining and Engineering;
the latter has proved very useful, but only for him.
Mining has been profitable.

A Holy/Ret Pally with Herbalism and Alchemy. This
makes him popular on raids, and is also profitable.

So, those two are maxed out. What next?

I have the possibility of

A level 58 DK, with no profs, but Hordeside, unlike
the rest.

A 75 Mage with non-maxed Enchanting and Inscription.

A 18 Rogue with no profs.

... or I could make something new. I have a bunch
of low level Horde chars I started before Cata, to
see what their zones were like,

Only the DK and Mage have a chance of getting maxed
professions.

The question is: What would be the most fun to play,
and the most useful profs to max?

ATM, I'm mostly doing the Pally as Ret and the Lock
as Destro; the latter is actually more fun. I don't
heal much anymore - my guild collapsed, and was never
top ranked in that. I've kept the gear up to par though.

That's right, yes :-)

Nice if you fancy a change, I know in Draenor Horde and Alliance have
different starting zones, and some different questchains in the later
zones, at least. Also it'll take virtually no time to get to 60 for
the profession bump.

A 75 Mage with non-maxed Enchanting and Inscription.
Both very useful professions.

As far as profs go, you don't need to max *anything* these days, all
major WoD recipes are learnable at 1 skill, and gathering can be done
with 1 skill; you'll get less if your skill is low (I believe crafting
also gives higher yield if maxed), but you can do everything to enough
extent that it isn't that bad if you don't have the skill.

Also garrisons give you access to other professions to a limited
extent, everyone gets a mine and a herb garden, plus you can choose
crafting (and skinning) buildings, can even disenchant if you take the
enchanting building (think I'll do that on my main to start with,
beats having a ton of stuff stack up in the mail till I take my
enchanter to Draenor!). Not as high yield as if you had the
professions, but does the job well enough to feed crafting professions
etc.

I find ele shaman very fun to play, might be kinda similar to destro
lock though, haven't played that but it seems to be about fiery nukes
;-) Also enjoy my rogue, combat seems much the same post-patch as
before, which is a relief as I've always enjoyed the way it plays!
What's fun to me isn't necessarily fun to everyone though, hey, I like
playing a Disc priest for soloing (well I do when my gear is good,
it's... not so fun when my gear sucks :-P)

alchemy, sometimes engineering which you have

bags are mostly useless now
Most character crafts are tending to be useless, no prof perks.
While some lucky recipes may be profitable the source mats are usually
better of marketing. 200 stack make them very compact now.
ALTHOUGH with no prof perks and promotions I have no idea how that is
going to go after WoD. No need to roll and level a prof for a 1% endgame
perks and the garrisons if you want to are going to dry up demand.

What would have been the best will only be know down the track, what
people like, what new toys/craft people favour. Some new recipe and it
will all be 'should have'. A particularly rare drop and it can be worth
rolling a profession just to use it.
If many people follow the same crafts as you then you will lose, if it
is just you making an engineering wonder brooch you will make a killing,
for a while.

The value for a max profession is now minimal, it is probably quicker
and easier just to promote then stay in a city and max profs off the AH.
A couple of k gold to level a prof, you could make that back in an hour
rather than mucking around with quests/npc/mobs/dungeons - IF the main
reason for doing it is just the professions.

A new dk if you want a tank on alliance, otherwise no reason you can't
have another warlock as a prof slot holder. Easier to level WoD if you
already know locks well.

Keep in mind that levelling professions is pretty much deprecated in
WOD.
