Discussion:
A few observations from levelling in Draenor

Just a few more observations. I just hit 97 tonight and am about 97.5 as I
log off. I don't think I've ever levelled as fast (maybe in Pandaria, but I
only played there briefly). Comparing leveling speed to BC or Wrath, it's
amazing how fast one progresses.

I still greatly enjoy the story lines, especially encountering places I
already know from the "future" (i.e. BC) and persons I've already
encountered (or rather will have encountered :-)

So far I've had a handful "elite" quests which suggested [3] players. I was
able to solo them all at level. Don't know if any class could do so or if
being a pet class is overpowered for these quests.

Riding around the southern zone (the one after Talador, can't quite recall
its name, corresponds to Skettis in BC) to pick up flight points (without
questing) I ran into a bug. Near one flight point there are horde logging
operations. I wanted to attack a mob standing next to a sparkling tree but
was told I could not as it was a PvP flagged mob and I wasn't flagged. So I
figured I would be safe and started marking the tree for logging. Sadly the
PvP flagged horde mob attacked me and my pet auto-defended me (without me
attacking the mob) and this flagged me. Seems to be a bug to me...

Anyway, I should have some more time tomorrow and I expect I'll get in a few
more levels.

Cheers

It is very fast indeed, considering all the massive server issues we
had the first week, I was shocked how fast I levelled when I actually
managed to play for a reasonable amount of time, was a lot faster than
expected. Fun, but fast.

Most classes can, but it does depend on the quest a bit, there was one
in Frostfire Ridge which I very much failed at soloing on beta (the
ogre on top of a tower for those who've played Horde), luckily other
players turned up when I did it on live so I didn't have to try again!
The other day a friend asked me to help with a rylak in Spires of
Arak, however he was a death knight, and as I got there I wondered
aloud if some specs had lost Army of the Dead, given that's usually an
I-win button - cue a rather embarrassed friend who'd forgotten it
existed ;-)

The great thing with garrisons for me is the Barracks turns any class
into a pet class with the bodyguards - not as controllable as a proper
pet, which can be rather a nuisance, but it made a huge difference for
me, as a disc priest I can solo things I doubt I'd even try without
the bodyguard. I started out with the tankier ones, I'm currently
using a caster and doing the tanking myself, as I've geared up a bit -
probably now I am at a gear lvl where I could solo, but when I was 40
ilvls lower, oh wow that helped a lot :-D

Not really a bug, it's a feature which prevents you from accidentally
flagging yourself. So you can't accidentally click that flagged idiot
bouncing all over a popular questgiver for example (I used to hate
that!). Also if you go and do a BG or whatever, the flag comes off you
immediately when you leave, instead of after 5 mins, I love that, no
more having to be in a safe town before queueing :-)

However, aggressive pvp-flagged mobs still are aggressive, and you get
flagged even without a pet defending you, as I learned by finding a
Horde flightpath in Gorgrond the hard way on beta, I was mounted and
did nothing at all but had to wait out the 5 mins anyway :-P Have to
say I'd rather the mobs did not flag you if you do nothing to them,
but it's been like that for years, I used to often get flagged by
those really annoying guards on the alliance town in north Howling
Fjord - they're well positioned so they aggro if as a lowbie you
follow the obvious path, and I'd get flagged even if they didn't
actually touch me. I guess it's intended, annoying as it is.

At your current rate of progress you'll probably hit 100 by then! Try
and have a go at the Southshore vs Tarren Mill battleground when you
get there btw, it's only temporary so you likely won't get another
chance, and it certainly brings back nostalgia - I didn't even do pvp
there in the old days but seeing the zone as it was pre-Cata brings
back memories, and it's kinda fun just slaughtering each other lol, no
flags or anything, just kill.

Molten Core is also only temporary, but you need 615 ilvl to queue,
and it might need a bit too much playtime for you to reach that in the
short time you have available, it's worth a look if you do manage to
get there though (IF any groups are actually capable of finishing the
place these days, I have a suspicion most people aren't going any
more, as all I hear is that it's a massive wipefest now the better
players stopped - although maybe higher ilvls are improving it a bit
now)

Quite a few Go here, oh look a horde base along the way , in draenor.
Maybe same for horde but alliance bases seem to be more on the edge of
maps or end of roads.
Quite a pain if you keep losing tooltips, grumble whine

Hearthstone to garrison also clears pvp, which you could be doing to
replace the suicidal bodyguard anyway :-)

Nope, known bug, and very very annoying, I didn't realise how much I
relied on tooltips till they started vanishing :-(

Do you also have the game randomly turn on nameplates for no reason, or
is that just me?

I miss the old days. I haven't killed anyone in years.
That's sad.

I have nampelates on anyway, so wouldn't notice! Had them turn *off*
randomly a couple of times but I always just blamed it on DCs and the
like...

Same here, I have nameplates on. And if they seemed to turn on/off for no
reason I would probably assume I had accidentally clicked on V instead of
whatever key I wanted to :-)

At least you don't have to dodge a horde town to get into Frostfire
Ridge... accessing SMV by road before you have a flightpath is
something of a challenge, have to be very careful what route you take!

I hate that bug, was around on beta for ages, beats me why they didn't
fix it before it went live, sigh.

Hehe yep, some of my bodyguards are terrible, alliance don't get the
belf warlock, but she's awful, constantly grabbing adds and joining in
other people's fights, seeing her dying to a mob not even tagged to
me, which I never once touched, is annoying!

Yeah, I read about that here and thought it was great. When I couldn't
attack that mob, I was glad for it and thought I'd be safe, recalling the
change...

unexpected :-)

I had the same with the guards when riding through the horde town in Feralas
that was the shortest path between the FP on the border to 1kN and Dire
Maul. I usually didn't bother riding around it (it was quite a detour) and
would just follow the road. You'd get flagged but with luck not be knocked
off your horse :-)

TM - SS PvP never really happened on my server (it was PvE) so there is not
so much nostalgia to be had but I might try it anyway.

Hehehe I always rode around that, the worst one for me on Alliance in
the old days was getting through Thousand Needles, as to reach
Shimmering Flats/Gadgetzan you had a choice between the guards at
Freewind Post or going through the middle of a centaur camp - and
often I was only about the same lvl as the centaurs, so they were
actually more lethal than the guards!

Yeah, I did get there within a few days, and without farming dungeons,
so if you did do a few dungeons you might get there... depends how
much time you have to throw at it though!

So far I've had a handful "elite" quests which suggested [3] players. I was

being a pet class is overpowered for these quests.
There is a single quest where you have to kill an elite in somewhere in
southern arak. My mage and my shammy died several times there, my kitty
druid barely survived thanks to my massive selfhealing while my lock
considered the elite as a just another day at the office (void tank ftw). :)
I cant remember the name of the quest.

Pet classes usually find things much easier.
Many of the [3] are fairly easy for any class just like the skull/rares.
A few have mechanics that are easy second/third time or if you have
bothered to research, but who researches every quest? Something
interruptible that restarts cast immediately so not really
interruptible, that sort of thing.
This early on there are usually a few people around or arriving soon.
Perhaps that biases the number, maybe more are actually quite hard. Just
you don't need to go to the trouble of groups forming right now.
And you get credit/loot even if you die just so long as someone kills it
before it resets.

A fire drake in north arak gave my melees some trouble, on a hill very
limited room to move and avoid a very severe cone. The hardest thing was
actually finding it in all the twisty turny valleys and hills.
