FAO Urbin - German server question

Hopefully you're reading, as I think you can answer my question;
Google didn't turn up a lot! Basically I've found myself on a German
speaking server, as I wanted to scratch a nostalgia itch and try
vanilla WoW again... all the English servers seem to be pvp, which I
hate, and the only not dead pve one I could find is German. My German
is very poor indeed (did 2 years in school, about 17 years ago...),
but I might manage to muddle through a group quest so long as I don't
have to talk; I can at least understand most of the LFM type messages
in world chat.

Problem is, how to get into a group in the first place! What's the
German equivalent of "inv pls"? :-D Google suggests "laden Sie bitte",
but I've no idea if that's even correct grammar for what I mean, nor
if the correct form is what people actually use (like on English
realms everyone says "inv pls" instead of "invite me please" :-))

Any other useful phrases/words I should know? Might be handy if I know
if someone's telling me to sap something I guess (playing a rogue) :-)

"inv pls" or "inv bitte" would probably work :-) Many of the common english
abbreviations used in WoW (and other online multiplayer games I suspect) are
also used or at least understood by German speaking players.

It's closer to the second than the first :-) but would definitelay be
undestood. The main thing people would find strange about it is the "Sie"
because that is the form used for people you are on a last name basis (the
polite form) that english is totally lacking. In the context of wow, where
everyone is on a first name/character name basis people always use "Du".

"invite me please" would be "lad(e) mich bitte ein" but back when I played
it would often have been shortened to "laden bitte" (roughly "inv pls") or
even just "laden" ("inv").

While in the early days there would have been quite a bit of friendly small
talk while grouping for quests together, during my stint back in Panda
(turtle farming anyone?) and for the free WoD week, I found that people in
the same area often just ninja invited others in the same region that were
obviously farming the same mobs or on the same quest and never spoke a word.
So you should be fine as a silent player, or if anyone starts chatting and
you don't understand what they are saying (or understand but are not sure
how to respond in German a brief "sorry, I only speak English" is unlikely
to get you kicked from the group :-)

What server did you end up being on?

Cheers

Ah good; I'd noticed a lot of "LFM" and the like, which I assume means
nothing at all in German, but wasn't sure if "inv" would be
understood, so it seemed a good plan to ask first ;-)

Yep, I remembered about the formal stuff from my old schooldays
(everything we learned then was in the formal version, so I'll have
the fun of trying to convert to "Du" if I actually do try and say
anything... :-))

Ah cool, I'd wondered if it could be shortened that way but again,
didn't want to end up completely incomprehensible, so thought best to
ask! I'll go with "laden bitte" then, I think; I always prefer to add
"please" when asking for invites in English as politeness never hurts
:-)

Yes, I'm hoping "ich spreche nicht gut Deutsch" will work well enough
:-) I'm thinking this realm may be more chatty than live, but I guess
I'll find out; certainly people are much more friendly in the world
chat as I read it (well, the bits I can understand!)

http://www.classic-wow.org/ - pretty fun for remembering the old days,
a few minor bugs but nothing gamebreaking so far, phew. Although I
wish all the readable notes you get given in quests were translated to
English like the rest of the client; it's hard going trying to
translate anything more than about a sentence long, so I just gave up
reading those hehe.

Thanks for the help, appreciated! Or should I say: Danke schoen!
(Won't make a fool of myself by trying to expand that any further ;-))

Wow, I hadn't realised such servers existed (nor would I have expected that
Blizzard would tolerate them).

Sounds pretty cool :-)

There's always been private servers I think, I've never been
interested, as I tend to think Blizz won't tolerate the more current
ones that well. But the idea of trying vanilla WoW again grew on me,
and in the end I couldn't resist it, it's such a change in pace from
the current game :-)

Enjoying it so far, a few inconsistencies, but overall it's mostly how
I remember. Totally different to the game now, it's way slower and way
harder to level, much more fun than just whizzing past everything in
a race to get to endgame boredom as fast as possible. I've always
loved the journey, so this is fun, also nice to see the zones as they
were before the Cataclysm reshaped tham.

Gotta say I'm surprised how few quests some zones have; because it's
so much faster now I'd thought that there must have been as many if
not more quests then than there are now, but some zones are very
sparse indeed, I have to keep checking external websites to make sure
I've not missed a chain. Also hadn't realised how many of the UI
things I consider standard now weren't actually in the game back then,
things like: autoloot, questgivers appearing on the minimap, being
able to see the health of mobs as a number not just a %, seeing enemy
cast bars... a lot has changed in 10 years, some of it definitely for
the better :-)

You can run a private server on your own machine and log in with
multiple accounts to test multibox and other things. Worked fine on a
dual core 3Ghz 6 years ago, with lower res for 4 or more accounts +
server running of course . It is a bit lonely just you with every item
available for the clicking and a 'kill everything in 50 yards' button
:-) Why am I looting kills, why??

I was a bit paranoid and ran all servers in a totally separate wow from
the paid version.

They seem to shut down the ones in the US.

I played around on a Lich King serve for awhile, but a it turns out
having a thousand other players on a server *is* useful.

It only lasted about 6 months.

Probably easier for them to do that than to get the European ones
under different laws and the like; I'd imagine it's too much trouble
to be worth it when it comes to a server in another country, running a
10-year-old version of the game, not like it's much threat to the live
servers (anyone who'd play vanilla and unsub from live probably wasn't
happy in live anyway and would've only gone to another game
instead...)

Yeah, most seem completely dead, and I remembered how many group
quests there are in vanilla... this one's quiet, but has about 800
players online at peak times (across both factions), so not totally
dead, at least - I figured people who speak a language I don't know
well is better than no people at all!

And quiet is far better for me than the pvp realm which recently
launched that has 8k online at the same time - my bf tried that one
(it's what got me interested in the idea of a vanilla realm) and it
was quite simply impossible to do any quests, due to way too many
people and way too few mobs - the faster spawnrates in busy areas was
only added in a later expansion (can't remember which, maybe Cata?).
