Ya know, for some reason I thought this was a kickass ring. But
I wnet up to buy it last night and ws really underwhelmed, particularly
for 60g. Am I missing something?

(Currently I have an 'of the owl' +10 int/spi ring and the 'chemist's
band' I think it is called)

It depends.

Do you raid?
Are you an "all purpose" player interested in everything and not only
BGs?

You know: if you just do BGs, those "Don" 's rings kick ass I think.
But if you do raids during the week, or if you farm a lot, or if you
have no problems with money so that you can buy everything interesting
at Auction House, well... Probably you'll have better rings BEFORE
getting Exalted :-)

That's what happened to me :-)

Nope, and probably never will

That would describe me.

I just hit exalted last night actually. I dunno, maybe I'm undervaluing
the 1% crit chance but it justdidn't seem worth the loss of stats.

Depends on your Class and Talent Spec.

The Chemist's Ring is one of the better green quest rewards for
casters, but for a Warlock, Don Rodrigo's is usually better. Stam with
Life Tap is better than Spirit all the time. And Warlocks have a very
popular Crit-centric Talent called Ruin. So you lose a little on your
mana pool for better damage... unless you're Raiding and worried about
threat. But Raiders aren't going to be wearing Chemist's Ring anyway.

Shadow Priests in PvP would probably wear DR's too. Healbot Priests
would probably not.

A Fire Mage would wear DR's as well, especially a Scorch build. Again,
depending on if they're Raiding or not. Frost used to be pretty
Crit-centric as well with Talents like Ice Shards / Shatter / Winter's
Chill. I don't know how popular that spec is now though.

I'm an offensively oriented shadow priest (well, they all are). I do heal
in instances though. I think my thinking was that 100% of my damage is
shadow based and except for a few shadow immune mobs that I've run across
it really doesn't seem to be something that people/mobs have much resist
against. If I was a fire mage or something, that'd be different (and as
you say, scorch oriented fire mage).

I did buy the +shadow and +healing offhands.

Anyhoo, I got about 2 weeks to decide, my iMac apparently became afflicted
with the bad capacitor problem from a couple of years ago so its in the
shop.

An enemy of equal level has a 4% base resist chance. This base resist
chance is countered with +spell hit equipment. The minimum base resist
level is 1% though, you can't decrease it any further. To this base
resist chance you have to add the special resistance of the mob, which
is not affected by the +hit chance though. So even with 100% +hit gear
the mob will resist spells, if the mob has special resistance. To
counter this special resistance, you need -resist gear. If the mob has
no special resistance though, the -resist gear is worthless.

In other words:
+hit is better than - resist, until you have +3% to spell hit
Post by j***@hexduxhmp.org
From there on -resist gear or +crit gear to increase damage
Or in even other words:
-resist for spell casters is similiar to "+attack power vs. <certain
types>" for melees. Just the spell caster does not have it so easy to
determine the matching opponent.

So if this ring sucks really depends on the rest of your equipment and
the kind of mob/enemy you fight. With the right equipment and enemy it
is a kickass ring.
