Favorite and Least-Favorite WotLK instances

I've run all but one of them in regular and heroic now (only exception is the
oculus which dammit nobody will run with me), and I'm curious as to which
instances people like and don't like.

Most Favorite: Halls of Stone. Blizzard really put the work into this one.
While it's true you only pay attention to the story the first or second time
in there, it is magnificently done and nice to have full voice acting for
most of it. You also get a handy dose or lore. Halls of Lightning is a good
runner up for some of the stunningly-good visuals in the rooms.

Least Favorite: Violet Hold. I just feel like this one is a rip off. It's
identical to black morass, but with no trash and less running around. Sure,
it's a quick and easy 3 badges but I'd like more of a challenge, more
storyline, and some uniqueness.

Most Challenging: Utgarde Pinnacle (heroic). In a guild run it's not to bad,
but dammit if you pug this beast you're in for the guantlet from hell on the
third boss. It takes a good 10 wipes for a pug to learn to not stand in the
frost, to pick up the spears, not to pull aggro from the constantly spawning
adds, and finally to not get insta-pwnd when the boss finally drops and
whirlwinds. Then the next time you pug it out, you have to go through the
same training motions all over again.

Least Challenging: Utgarde Keep. On heroic or normal, this place just felt
like a breeze. At least on heroic, it seems to me to be the fastest
reputation gain rate of any of the dungeons.

hmmm I ran Nerub and Old Kingdoms last night and I did enjoy the
sights and creativeness of Old Kingdoms

we did Normal as I'd never been there before but I liked the 2nd Boss
fight where she sacrafics (or tries to) one of her minions and you
have to kill them before they get into the circle below her and get
absorbed (really nice for me as I was on my Arcane Mage so I popped
Slow and then DPS them down)

and even though it was easy I enjoyed the last boss fight going around
killing 4 mirror Images of my party members and laughing when they
complained I kept Frost Nova'ing them in Mirror Form

I'd have to agree too UK in any form is still very easy I remember
going in there at 70 and reading about all the boss fights and
wondering if they were going to be a challenge

then one shotting everything in AoE Farm Mode and just pure Tank and
Spank

even the 2nd Boss in UK is easy where if you kill one of the 2 bosses
it comes back as a Mirror Image and attacks the party

I'm looking forward to run Naxx with my Guild when were ready for it
as my friend irl has already cleared the 25 man and managed to get
server first so it looks like alot of fun

sadly no Server First for me so no title but hey that's what I get for
being so damn casual

Yeah agreed on those, I also love Stratholme, wonderful place and fun
instance as well. Tbh I like them all, really good work put into making
them unique and interesting.

I'd probably agree, it's the only one where my first experience wasn't
"wow this is cool" but more "is that it?" Was tougher on heroic at
least, but wiping several times to the same boss and having to clear 12
waves of trash only to wipe again also got old fast...

Not even a pug tbh, it took up a lot of wiping to work out what the
strategy should be, and we were guild group. Of course when we get it
it'll be much easier on future runs but it's a hard learning curve. Note
to anyone trying it for the first time: don't think that you can aoe all
the adds at one go; you can't. Not unless both tank and healer are in
full epics anyway, we had about 3 wipes trying that bright idea, no way
I could outheal it for long.

Oculus is also pretty tough though, the first boss is alright but the
2nd one takes some working out, while the last one... oh boy did that
take a lot of tries before we made it work.

Agreed, except the last boss which is a bit challenging on heroic.
Stratholme is a close runnerup, albeit the healing os rather more of a
challenge on heroic mode, every boss is a bit tough there.

Not so easy if you get that darn Voidwalker as the 2nd boss. And
really annoying to have to start again then, especially since unlike
lBM it is mostly unchallenging (I liked BM). They should either make
the thing harder overall, or allow you to start with the trash of the
boss you wiped on.

Pretty easy but nice. I think my tip for the fun, reasonably easy
dungeon that people will do a lot is Draktharon Keep, though. Of
course it depends on the drops, which I haven't yet paid much
attention to.

I liked the Old Kingdom.

Azjol-Nerub is just too small. The rest are fine though I wouldn't
mind a *bit* more trash.

All in all, they seem easier than the dungeons from 60-70, but then I
am not the same mage...

I've tried them all in normal, and none so far in heroic (still
waiting for a couple of my regular party members to hit 80!).

I like all of the instances - they're all different and fun.

I love the fighting on dragon-back in the Oculus - it's completely
different to any of the other instances, espsically the last boss.

The 3rd boss in Utgarde Pinnacle is also good fun, and I quite enjoy
the 3rd boss in Halls of Lightning too. In fact I love anything more
than a simple tank & spank, where I have to think about things other
than just healing.

So far I hate the last boss in Halls Of Lightning - even in normal
mode I've had problems keeping myself alive (although we've never wiped
on him, I've died most times...).

Stratholme is great - just for the lore and to see the place how it
used to be.

Hopefully my friends will hit 80 in the next day or 2 and we can get
on to some heroics!

Are heroics much easier than in outlands? I hear everyone even on my server
going to heroics as soon as they ding 80. I remember we tried rampants
heroic when we dinged 70 and our tank got 2 shot by 1 mob with a pally
healing him. We tried the same pull 3 times and we quit. Many heroics were
so hard that you needed very good gear to make it. No way all these lvl 80
have so good gear.. so are heroics much easier or did people grind half epic
gear overnight?

I am a bit curious about this myself. All in my guild says they are dead
easy and laugh a bit when I say I want to gear up a bit (I am healer,
the others are not).

Problem is that wherever I read on my regular healing blogs and forums
people say that healing in the new heroics is challenging. Here is one:

It most certainly is challenging. probably the people who claim they are
easy are a) dps and/or b) in Sunwell gear, and/or c) only tried Utgarde
Keep. The rest of us need to gear up a touch... healing is really hard
work on bossfights and not always easy on trash! Improving my gear made
a big difference though, oce I got to full 80 blues with a couple of
epics it was still challenging but at least now possible without an
offhealer.

Yeah. Did the Heroic Daily today which was Ahn'Kahet. I really had a
tough time. The last two bosses were pretty easy actually. Some of the
trash pulls I actually had to prioritize who I let die :(

Amanitar was pretty tough for me, had to focus entirely on the tank and
had to let one dps die. Elder Nadox was close second in "toughness"
healingwise.

My gear is dungeon-blues and a couple of BoE blues from the AH which
seemed better than any of the drops I have access to right now. Got
myself 7 Emblems and need 25 for the nice offhand:

Yep, a few fights are like that, some other fights it's more a case of
let *all* the dps die... I hate it when it gets that bad but if they're
not managing to avoid aoes that they need to avoid... well, the tank
does very good dps now *and* can take the hits, if needs be he and I can
duo a pretty big chunk of health between us even if everyone else is
dead! Much better when I can keep everybody alive but it's not always an
option unless everybody is very much on their toes (Oculus I'm looking

Yeah, it's not so fun on heroic though :-P Once you work out the
strategy it's alright, and very very satisfying to finally beat it but
it's bloody hard until you've worked out a method!

Likewise, on normal mode, on heroic it's tough though, many wipes while
you're working it out. Haven't done HoL on heroic yet but UP 3rd boss
was... ack. By the time we figured out a tactic that *should* work we
had respawns and didn't much fancy reclearing half the instance :-P

All stand on top of him, then you only have to eat the occasional aoe
and not the constant aura - it's much easier that way! Only person I've
had trouble keeping alive there was a mage who decided not to stand on
top of him, that wasa bit tricky, but everyone else was fine.

Hope so, they're a really fun challenge to heal. Although be warned,
unless you're in full blues from lvl 80 instances you may like to have
an offhealer in the group who can help on bossfights - I have some fair
trouble keeping everyone up at times! The fights are challenging but a
little heavy on aoe or random damage to party members... :-P

So far, heroic Stratholme is the one I hate the most. The trash is
horrible, especially the trash pulls before Chrono-Lord Epoch. It's
like that trash encounter is designed around moomkins. Sleep one mob,
root a second, dps a third, backup heal when needed (and you *will*
need to backup heal). Since the trash is dragonkin, no other CC is
viable - not even traps, because Arthas constantly likes to break CC,
so any CC with a cooldown, like trap, just isn't useful.

The only way I've been able to do this place is to put on my healer
set, and pretend to be a moonkin.

Personally, I found heroic Utgarde Pinnacle to be a walk in the park,
although I would hate to pug a heroic Pinnacle run. As long as you
have just one person who knows the gauntlet, and as long as everyone
else can follow directions, the gauntlet is a very smooth fight.

Really? I thought that place was easy (the hardest bit for me is the run
up to Mal'Ganis because Arthas likes to ninjapull extra adds, the
dragonkin bit is fine). Get your tank to gear up a bit if he can't just
tank them all; we have no trouble there, or else let Arthas offtank one
if you really can't manage it (tell your healer to /focus him to keep an
eye on his health). We use no cc at all there, never seen a need for it,
even the first time we tried.

Probably is if somebody knows the perfect tactics but try running the
place when *everybody* is learning it for the first time. Not even
remotely easy.

The key draw of this instance is its location and the short time it
takes to complete. It's in Dalaran and can be done in about 20
minutes. It's ideal when you don't have an hour or four to run
instances.

Sure, it's boring, easy, and I'm sure I'm going to get downright sick
of it after awhile. It's far from my favorite, but I'm sure glad it's
there for it's logistical utility.

I like the long drop between the 2nd and last boss of Azjol'Nerub. I
was in the instance with a group where no one else had done the
instance yet, so it was new for all of us. After killing the 2nd
boss, no one knew where to go. I ran down the web-ramp and dropped
into a room where I was instantly attacked by a bunch of weak mobs.
One rain of fire knocked them all out. But I couldn't go back up the
way I came. I saw the hole in the floor and went to see what was down
it. Got too close and fell in however. I fell for quite a distance,
and figured this was certainly a painful death coming up. Landing in
the water was a bit of a surprise though.

Tricky part was convincing the rest of the group to follow suit. All
they saw was me fall into a hole that you couldn't see the bottom of.
They eventually followed. One guy had gone AFK and put himself on
follow. He landed in the water, and went underwater. We stood there
and looked at him for a minute before someone mentioned he was going
to drown. I cast unending breath on him.

I've only done Nexus, Utgarde Keep, Azjol'Nerub, and Ahn'Kahet so
far. I think my favorite boss so far was the last boss of Nexus, but
not because it was a unique fight or anything, only for the long quest
chain involved in Coldarra that explains why she is the last boss of
the instance. Azjol'Nerub also has Arub'Narak, the guy who helped
Arthas reach Icecrown in TFT.

I need to figure out which instance is next on the list. What are
instances doable at level 75?

Hehe I loved that drop, nobody in our group had been before either, so
we got to it and the thought process was like "so where next?" "Down

75, hmm, that sounds like Drak'Tharon Keep time - it's on the border

I need to figure out which instance is next on the list.  What are
instances doable at level 75?
75, hmm, that sounds like Drak'Tharon Keep time - it's on the border
between Grizzly Hills and Zul'Drak. Very fun last boss fight, I enjoy
that one a lot!
It's actually one of the easiest instances, on;y the dinosaur boss
usually gives trouble, and eben he is nothing special.

What trouble? We went there last night first time and accidentally ninja
pulled the dino boss without even reading tactics, it was first time for all
and he dropped without any problem and I was talking with my blood DK.

We managed that as well, he's more problematic on heroic, we learned the
hard way that he pulls all the raptors around if you didn't clear them
first on heroic (he doesn't on normal) Very easy place on both modes
though, and fun too.
