Discussion:
Confusion over add-ons

Can someone on this NG clear up my confusion over the Add-on display
screen.

Usually on some alts the add-on display screen shows every add-on linked
to that one specific alt.

Occasionally on other alts the add-on display screen shows every add-on
available and loaded into the system.
When this happens clicking on the display button in the add-on screen
shows a limited choice rather than the button labelled :Custom Addons
for: which when pressed shows the lists of alts available on that
server.

How do I make the system just show the add-ons for that specific alt
only?

Im not completely sure about what you mean. But in the Addon List
window you see a dropdown menu in the upper left corner. Select the
char you wish to edit, check/uncheck the addons you wish to use on your
specific char and viola. Does this answer your question? :)

No it doesn't. Quite often that dropdown menu is not present and the
Addon list shows every addon available to every character. Character
selection is not available.

I was able to reproduce the situation I'm complaining about thus.

A level 73 character in Dalaran.
I clicked on the Addons selection in the drop down menu, from within the
game, and was presented with a screen headed "Addon Control Panel".
Below the panel was one other box marked "Custom" with a drop down menu
offering the following choices:

Titles
Default
Ace2
Author
Grooup by name
Separate LOD list

Clicking on one or more of the above choices did not give me the option
of altering the addons for my character.

Below the drop down box were other choices marked "Sets", "Disable all",
"Enable all", "Recursive", "Reloaad UI", and "Close".

I'm using an iMac running OS X v10.9.1

Ah, replied before seeing this - your problem is that you're using an
addon to control your addons, not the default system method. You need
to logout of your character, then in the bottom left corner of the
character select screen, is an addons button, which always lets you
select which character to select addons for. You're using the addon
Addon Control panel, which I know nothing about except that it exists;
it sounds as though it's not working well though, so I'd be inclined
to bin it and use the normal method instead ;-)

Assuming you're right, and I'm sure you are, the only problem with not
using the Addon Control Panel is you can change your character's addons
in game without logging out. And that's very useful.

I don't think the default will allow that, or will it?

Anyway, if the situation persists I'll do away with it.

Thanks for all of the replies.

Correct, it doesn't allow it - that'd be a pretty useful feature, but
it does sound like it's not really working for you at present anyway.
Perhaps check to see if there's an update to Addon Control panel that
might fix it?

Addon Control Panel have been working fine for me for several
expansions, so it must have been a wrong setting that gave the problem.
<http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/acp>

A very smart feature at ACP is to be able to make different profiles for
a char, so one can by one click disable or enable a lot of addons, when
raiding, in BG, Arena or at AH.

Ah, you're talking about something else entirely. The only addons screen
I ever look at is the one on the character selection screen you get
before logging in to a server.

That shouldn't even be possible... it should always be present. Even
when I only have one character on a server the dropdown menu is still
there. I'd say something's messed up in your WoW install if it's not
even there, try clearing your WTF fiolder (this WILL delete your addon
settings, so maybe rename it rather than deleting it, so you can
copy+paste the savedvariables files back later!), failing that, might
need a reinstall of WoW.

I've never seen the list of addons restricted to the addons for one
character. It always lists ALL the addons installed, and the dropdown
allows you to select a different set for each character (like only
enabling Paladin addons for a paladin).

There might be a checkbox for enabling per-character addons? It's been a
while since I looked at it.
