Discussion:
"Secret" places?

There has recently been a thread or two about that place in Dun Morogh,
which one seens when one flies from Ironforge to the town in the
Wetlands. Apparently one can get to that place (although the Gryphon
Flight Spot is non-functional), it is just very difficult (I have not
been there).

But what other places are there?

I haven't played very far into the game yet, but I've found two:

One is in Elwynn Forest, at the lake east of Stormwind. One can actually
find a secret area if one goes north at the waterfall, and then west.
There's a small house, a dock, and half a dozen Defias. Sometimes
there's a chest. There may be a herb as well.

The other is on the ships that takes you between the harbours. If you
jump just right, you can get up over the frontal bulwark and stand on
the long pole that sticks out in front of the ship. That gives a very
good view of your surroundings, with the foremost sails only obstructing
a small fraction of it.

Are there any other places of this type? Not necessarily "secret", or
worthwhile to get to, but just spots that you don't stumble over during
your ordinary explorations?

The coolest "secret" place I've been to is Hyjal. I've heard rumors of
people getting suspended for going there, but have never known this to
happen to anyone. I've been there a few times, my entire guild has
gone on a picnic there, plenty of other people I know have been there
and I've never known anyone to have issues with the Powers That Be(tm).

It's hard to describe how to get there. Best idea would be to do a
search on google video or such for Hyjal. The "entrance" is in
Winterspring, deep in the south where all the demons are. You have to
do some tricky jumping and maneuvering, but it's well worth it.

Large landscape, completely empty of enemies and NPCs, long winding
mountain paths over deep valleys with all sorts of neat things to look
at. Be prepared for two surprises at the end of the road. There's
also a point in the west that you can jump from and if you use enough
Feather Falls, you can sail right *over* Felwood and Darkshore into the
ocean.

"Ironforge airport" as we call it on our server could be accessed from
the enterence to loch modan coming from Dun morogh. Apparently tho
blizzard made it impossible to get there from this point in 1.12 :(
PS as a horde player it was great getting to the very highest point
above IF and jumping into menethil with slowfall on :D (just wish i
could see the look on some peoples faces when they see a troll fall
from out of nowhere ^^)

Inside Stormwind are 2 different back alleys - one is called Cutthroat
Alley, but I'm not sure if the other has a name. From the canal side of the
Dwarven dist. (facing Catheral of Light) go in a building and out the back
door. The other is opposite the Pig & Whistle Tavern in Old Towne. Cut
between 2 buildings, like cut-thru to the bank from the main street, and
hey, presto a secret alley! There's even a shop called The 5 Deadly Poisons,
or something, but no NPCs or content as far as I can tell.

I'm sure there's a quest to beat someone up in that alley (part of the
missing diplomat chain, perhaps).

Correct. Cutthroat alley isn't really a hidden area. But there's not much
there, probably so that people doing the quest are less likely to get
random help when they get jumped. *

The catacombs under the SW cathedral are not really hidden either,

There's the dwarf farms on the east coast of Arathi Highlands that
you can get to by swimming, and the empty tauren building and
empty cave on the south coast of Sithilus that you can get to by
swimming from Feralas or Tanaris.

A place hardly anyone visits is the Master's Cellar in Deadwind
Pass in the Karazhan, just some 58-60 creatures to grind who don't
drop much apart from runecloth and the odd healing potion.
A couple of underground areas there, and an instance that isn't
open yet.

I recently stealthed all over the place in deadwind pass, but I wasn't

of the sites for burning crusade instances I think. The entrance to the

The ghosts were upgraded to elite in a recent patch, they used to
be ordinary 20ish ghosts, IIRC.

Yeah, when Urbin was questing from South Shore and collecting stranglekelp
he ended up on the island and found it good XP grinding, as they were easy
to kill and had a reasonably high respawn rate (just jump off the top of the
island, swim back to the start, rinse and repeate).

It's a good thing I know now, that they are no longer an easy grind :)

Just a lot of dead mages and paladins with an attitude. After I discovered
it for the first time, I worked my way all the way to the top of the island
(it's a spiral), and got nothing for it other than the random drops off the
ghosts. *

for some reason I decided that part of the book must be there.

The island is part of the T0.5 questseries. Since then there are
lvl 56+ elites there. Before the patch, there were lvl 28+
undead with a named, non-elite at the top of the tower, but not
involved in any quest AFAIK.

!!! When I read elsewhere in the thread that they'd become elites I'd
imagined they'd simply be elite versions of the 20-something ghosts
I'd seen in my brief visit there. 56+!?! 20-30 full levels above the
rest of the zone? Wow.

Yeah, a buddy of mine was asking about Purgation Isle and having been
there long ago, I recommended he go check it out. Unfortuntately with
the changes I sent him to a swift death. At least now I know why the

Makes sense if they're part of the 0.5 quest series - it would be pretty
silly to make the objective of a quest you'll only be doing at 57+ a bunch
of level 30s, elite or otherwise. And it's not a place you'll just wander
into - it takes a good 3 minutes of swimming to get there. *

Yeah, I ran into that one the other night. Was on one of my chars
over by Azurlode and said "what is that big island on the map?". Swam
over to it and didn't even get all that close before a ?? elite
ghost put a SWP on me and I died in two ticks.

The most exciting place I have ever been to was "behind the scenes"
area in Silithus.

I was fighting near the Twilight Master's cave when I overstretched
myself and found myself with 10% health vs a mob. My back was to the
hills so I had no where to back up to -- then I noticed a slope that
looked climable. So I climbed it. And when I was there I noticed it
kept going up, so I followed it thinking to find a tower with an NPC or
something.

Moments later I find myself staring down on the Twilight Master's cave
in front of me and behind me, large absolutely flat mono-colored
terrain -- it was the "area" between Un'goro and Silithus.

In the middle of of that flat terrain was a chasm of absolutely smooth
walls. The chasm was about the height of Tanaris from the floor of
Un'goro. It was pretty amazing, as if you were let behind the scenes of
a broadway play and you find the props all strewn about.

I fell into the chasm and would have died if I did not have slow fall,
which I had to use twice. I rode the length of the chasm and it was a
good run, it was as long as an entire zone. There were some holes in
the ground, as if some designer took a perfect cube of "ground" out.

After a bit, I started to get a bit of a headache from the repetitive
brown patterns and I decided that I didn't want to be caught by the big
bad security guard. So I portaled out.

But I have screenshots somewhere :)

Ooh, I've been to that place but from the other side - one day I was just
exploring, went round the coast of Tanaris to the beach at the south, and
then just randomly climbed up some hills to see how high I could get.
Suddenly I found myself on this featureless brown shelf, with a very steep
cliff down to the lower ground on one side, and another steep cliff up to
some mountains on the other (the ocean side)

I rode along the shelf until I came upon that chasm you found; I was
wondering if there was any way I could get to the other side, but the cliff
up to the area south of Silithus (I assume containing AQ) was absolutely
enormous, probably twice as high as the one down to the bottom. I didn't
try jumping down as I was on my rogue (no slow fall) and knew it would be
fatal but it was really fascinating to see it!

My favorite place like this is Beggar's Haunt, in Duskwood. I don't
know if there's a quest there that I've never seen, but it seems
deserted most times. It's the knight's tomb, with the two statues with
glowing eyes, next to a waterfall, behind the tower next to the road to
Deadwind Pass.

I just found that today on my undead 31 warlock. There were two Horde
undead NPC's out front, including an apothecary. I'm expecting a quest
there at a higher level, perhaps out of the base in Swamp of Sorrows.

There's a Horde quest starting there, about 38 Elite or some such. You
have to kill some elite mobs all over the world and bring some drops
back, from that they create a poison which you have to feed a prisoner
in Stonard (who wants to tell Thrall that the undead are up to something).

been there).
But what other places are there?
I have heard that it is possible for mages to blink inside the orb
surrounding Dalaran at a particular point. Haven't tried it myself.

I found this one yesterday. It's called Thunder Falls. The chest was
there, didn't look for herbs. It would be a really nice place to hang out
if the Defias weren't already doing the same.
