I've been playing Warcraft for so long now I'm finding it rather boring.

My Alts usually follow the main story line and by the time they've
achieved level 75 or thereabouts I'm fed up with them.

PvP doesn't appeal, neither does role playing and I don't do raids or
other team events, mainly from ignorance on how to behave and act.

So I thought I might look for another game to play. So can anyone
recommend an alternative, hence the header.

Yeah, I am getting pretty over it for now.

There are a lot of f2p and they can be fun but I wouldn't want to try
and see them as long term.
With wow you go away and come back and everything is still there,
completely morphed, strange numbers, but still more or less there.
Not so much with f2p.

I can't recommend any for your request.
Planetside 2 is okay but total pvp. I hate pvp on wow but there it -is-
the game, not so bad. At least you can go play tourist and not be
guaranteed of being wiped out if you set foot out of defined progress zones.
Pick any that look like they will be fun for a while. Read reviews.
Repeat every 2 weeks. Provided you have enough quota for the 25 gig
downloads.

Just don't get sucked into the money tornado.
Really, they are designed to suck you in.
Or you could try solitaire or long walks, gardening, reading books,
clearing out the backlog of things you meant to do.
Seriously, it doesn't have to be online mmporg.

Come back to wow in a year, or two, for a week or a month, it will still
be there.

PS2 was alright, but to me, not a patch on original Planetside, sure
the graphics are tons better, but the actual playing... not so much.
Full health to dead in what felt like half a second (maybe
lag-assisted but still) isn't much fun to me, and the new base layouts
are too outdoorsy, not enough indoor combat with tight tunnels and
chokepoints, which I loved in original Planetside. It's also way too
complicated with about 10 million different weapons and scopes and
stuff - maybe it's intuitive to people who play FPS regularly but I've
got zero idea what's good to use.... it was much simpler in the
original game so I could easily pick something to suit my needs.

The original goes free-to-play next month apparently, I'll be
reinstalling it then, for sure - it's not worth paying a sub for any
more, as it's pretty much dead since PS2 came out, but by what I read
on the forums, a number of oldtime players are going back to the
original when it goes free - hopefully!

Very true, the weather's been lovely this past week after a crap
winter and my garden is looking much tidier as a result of me staying
away from WoW :-)

Thats about right.
More towards but not actually realistic than wow and others which some
people seem to confuse with something called combat, may as well be
championship tiddlywinks while ballrom dancing :-).

I suppose I could recommend hack/rogue/nethack, for some simple retro
but it isn't everyones taste.

Probably a bit too much of a jump from HD 100fps 20 gigabyte games.
Compact, simple , stop any time, really, I can stop, I just don't want
to. And incredibly frustrating. Instant permadeath. ( without save level
cheating :-)
The first video gives a good idea.

Realism isn't a big thing in games. It doesn't sell , big dollops of
pseudo violence but not realism.
What if a lvl 1 had a 5% chance to take out a lvl 90 and get away
undetected in pvp?

So just to illustrate how it can go, it isn't always instant death.
It is usually necessary to get a few levels down quickly to get enough
food.

New game, small room. Blank walls.
The rng gods did not smile.
It took so long to (s)earch and find any door and it was so tough to
(k)ick in that the character starved to death , level 1, room 1, 0 points

For now I am (re)finding that more interesting than wow , though I do
log in to give people a bling drop and check the ah bankers.

I used to play a different version so nethack has a few changes but is
much the same. Most people would probably find it crushingly boring and
so old, it was old long before what is retro was thought of..
I don't know if that means I have an overactive imagination, or no
imagination at all.

Try one of the dozens of Angband variants. There is something for every
taste, even multiple real-time multi-user variations such as Mangband
and TOMENet.

Peter
I've been out now since October last year. Once a month or so, I lurk
check the group here to see if anything is going on, see the threads and
don't even read them as they don't interest me now. I have to say I
thought I'd go through withdraws quitting cold turkey one night, but I
haven't missed it at all - not even an itch - which tells me I was done
I guess. I can tell you I've caught up on much needed sleep over the
last 5 months. :)

As far as other games, my biggest concern may not be yours, so I don't
know if it will interest you. I didn't want to get sucked into a
another time hog (my concern). I actually have gotten into a
tablet/phone app (f2p) similar to clash of clans, but in my opinion
better called "Castle Clash". I haven't paid one dime for it and while
it takes me longer to build up things because of it, it doesn't stop me
from advancing, like clash of clans. It also reminds me a bit of the
older warcraft I and II, where you build and improve your towns, run
dungeons, raid other player areas, run an arena, and have your own town
attacked by the computer to earn rewards if your defenses hold up and
join guilds where you can fight bosses. It only requires 10-15 minutes
here and there throughout the day so it's perfect for me. The major
thing is that you don't control your characters. Your the general
placing them in the filed of battle and deploying them at the right
times, so it's a thinking/strat game more than a POV rotations WoW type
game.

This is probably the game types I'm going to stick with for a while. My
family enjoys me around more, it's easily mobile as we travel RV'ing in
the summer (so no worries about missing a raid, etc) and the such.

I may come back to WoW for 60 days at some point as someone gave me a 60
day card as a birthday gift, not realizing I had quit. So I may save
that if I get the itch when the next expansion comes out....Or I might
"re-gift" it to my friend that still plays every now and then...

Have fun all!

Same here, though I've been out a fair while longer (since before Pandaria,
with a month to test play the expansion, I don't think I'll be back for the
next one). While I had repeatedly failed to "play reasonably", going cold
turkey was surprisingly easy without any withdrawal symptoms. I guess by
playing a little I was always aware what I didn't get around to do, so I
kept playing more and more trying to catch up, being away from it there was
no need to catch up :-)
I didn't want to get sucked into a another time hog (my concern).
I have since spent a bit of playing Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2, both of which
I enjoy a lot and I appreciate them having solo modes that are a lot of fun
and easily interruptible (remember Burt asking for the Pause button in WoW?)
which makes it much more compatible with family needs while I play. Plus,
playing solo, I don't constantly see what others achieve, feeling the need
to satisfy my completionist side. I've had much more success playing a
little here and there with those two games, while still having a great time
when doing so.

I've dabbled at Hearthstone during the Beta but after a short while became
rather bored of it, I haven't fired it up in several months now.

Cheers
Urbin

What sort of game? I know a lot of people are enjoying Hearthstone which
at least has the advantage that you are playing against other people.

All the other MMOs are terrible though.

I think everyone gets bored from time to time, I do myself, at present
I'm having a rest from WoW and playing D3 instead, since the patch
changed things up a lot and the expansion is due next week; I log on
WoW for a few minutes now and again, but that's been about it the last
few weeks, other than a bit of levelling on an ironman character (if
you're bored of regular levelling, the ironman challenge is a pretty
fun way of changing things there btw - no gear with stats, no talents,
no spec, no buffs, and no dying - makes it a lot more challenging and
so also a lot more interesting!)

As for other games, depends what type of game you want - I find I
still retain enough interest in WoW to not want to try another MMO as
I've invested so much into WoW it would be hard to start over in
something fresh. I can recommend D3 as being pretty fun, and a game
called Banished that came out recently (citybuilding game) ate a week
or two as well, and I don't feel finished with that one yet.
Hearthstone is also fun if you still like the Blizzard feel of things,
and it has the bonus of being free :-)

Deus Ex 1 & 3. No doubt. Give yourself 10-15 mins to read the reviews.
Deus Ex 1 from 2000 is ancient compared to today's technical(!)
standard. But the gameplay still rocks. Hard! :)
