Whew, I've just had a sharp lesson in how different a fight can be
when you change class! I usually do my TBC raid pet runs on my priest,
who can solo pretty much anything in Disc spec thanks to its
semi-decent dps and amazing self-healing; its only weakness is no
interrupt. But my mage has recently reached 70 and I love the Tier 5
mage set, so wanted to get that for her; she's on the same account as
the priest so out came my feral druid to do the run.
No trouble in Tempest Keep (actually, Void Reaver is far easier,
thanks to silence not mattering), or with Magtheridon (where I went
for the glowy red staff), likewise the earlier bosses in SSC were
fine. But Vashj! Oh my goodness. My priest usually has a bit of
trouble keeping on top of the elementals, particularly with the naga
and feary stalker spawns as well, but generally I get to phase 3 with
Vashj on about 70 stacks of +dmg buff, which is tough, but survivable
with my self-healing, I've susccessfully beaten it several times.
My druid though... just could not get near most of the elementals (no
ranged attacks suitable for quickly oneshotting them), kept getting
feared all over the place so missed a few tainted ele spawns as well,
and ended up reaching phase 3 with over 160 stacks of +dmg buff (some
comments on Wowhead say it caps out at 99 stacks, but I'm *sure* it
said 159 when I looked, and there were still several eles heading in
at that point...). Considering a feary stalker was also up when she
went live, you can imagine how long I lasted... about 10 seconds lol.
I did note some comments from people who'd soloed it using Ysera's
Gift (I forgot to grab that talent when it was added, looks amazing
for soloing stuff!) but I'd already left by that point, since I was so
badly beaten I doubt there's much hope for me really. Talk about a
difference; my druid and priest do pretty much the same dps as each
other, and are fairly even at soloing most stuff (druid takes more dmg
but maybe my talent switch will solve that one now!), but that fight?
Night and day.
Two massive positives though:
1. Vashj drops the head. My mage is a troll, and her red hair is a
perfect match for the set - given I usually prefer seeing my
characters' faces, no need to waste more effort on Vashj then!
2. I had the most ridiculous drop luck: all four of the other pieces
(legs aren't visible but it was a stat upgrade and setbonus is nice),
the red staff from Magtheridon, *and* the rare drop from trash
matching belt, all dropped! No need for boots due to being a troll,
so, full set in one go! :-D
http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/draenor/Caora/advanced - the
pose isn't the greatest but anyway, I'm very happy with my mage's
looks right now! Feeling rather twinked out with that gear, too; talk
about luck with drops; I only did two Kara runs to get from 68-70, as
well, so those drops were handy! Pondering a better staff tbh, this
one isn't a great match, but the best ones I can find are either pvp
ones or 25-man Ulduar/Icecrown, and I don't think I'm quite able to
boost through those yet lol. Maybe next expansion!
