Discussion:
[Q] How to make [warlock) demon attack target
(too old to reply)

I've just started a human warlock and was wondering how (if possible) to
make one's pet/demon initiate an attack. At this point, my imp and
voidwalker are passive and don't attack until the mob hits me. I'm probably
missing something crucial, in which case I would appreciate having it
pointed out.

You may notice when you summon your imp or void that there's a button bar
that appears above your normal button bars. This is the button bar with your
minion commands. Mouse over each button; the attack button should be the
first one. That's how you make it attack first, although you'll probably not
want your imp to tank for you. :)

Give him a jug of firewater first and he'll surprise you ;)

Select a baddie, and press the button that looks like clawmarks, or press
alt-F1. Your minion will then run in to attack. When set on passive, pets
will not attack even IF you are attacked - all attacks are strictly manual.
In a group, use passive without exception, and keep your pets on a very
tight leash - call them back if a baddie starts to run. When soloing,
defense mode (pet will auto attack if you are attacked) is OK. I have yet
to find a situation where agressive mode is anything other than suicidally
stupid in actual gameplay. It can be slightly amusing if in an area far
below your level. *

The ONLY time that I've used auto attack is in the event in ZF where you
have the waves of mobs rush you up to the top of stairs. At that time it
was very helpful for the pet to continue to attack without me having to
either be hit, or select a target for it to attack... with the number of
mobs, the lack of downtime for the pet to fight was helpful. If I did catch
aggro, I could just select the mob hitting me and auto attack the pet so he
would swap targets and draw the mob off of me.

It's a very specific instance, but there may be other examples of when you
can use auto attack.

Just a guess because I haven't been in such a situation with my hunter or
warlock, but wouldn't mass pvp with an agressive imp/succubus/felhunter
make sense?
Or is there a reason which makes this a bad idea?

I've found the pvp situation to be precisely (and only) where
"Aggressive" finds its use -- if I know a rogue is likely to ambush me,
the pet on aggressive means that server-side logic will sic the animal
on the bastard far quicker than my network/client/human lag can
accomplish.

Forgetting to change that setting later has gotten me into some funny
scrapes as I watch the cat run off into the woods for no apparent
reason...

Cheers,
I like to make a macro that makes my pet attack and casts a dot, and bind it
to a number key...

/script PetAttack();
/cast Corruption();

I use Flexbar, which has a useful bit called Flexpet buttons. Which is
kinda like a macro, only a lot easier, that allows me to bind a pet button
to a normal hotbar button. So I have the ` key bound to whatever the first
button is on the pet bar, which is always Attack, so far.

Later on, when I get pets that require these sorts of things, it'll also
let me bind a key for Seduction, or Suffering, or Spell Lock. So far, I
pretty much only ever use my Void, and the only spell he needs is Torment
on auto, and Consume Shadows once in a while.
