I was running MC on my main, a warlock-engineer, and this pattern dropped.
Just for fun I figured I'd make one for my level 62 prot pally alt. It was
expensive, but this thing is a blast!

It's one of the few items that I feel like blizzard actually expended some
effort to make the proc ability look cool. Whenever it blocks, there is a
lightning effect that shoots out of the shield to all (or most?) or the
nearby mobs. Bad thing is, it suffers durability loss 50% of the time it
blocks. Four and a half outland pulls and it was toast (that's 50silver
repair bill per pull!). I'm going to have to build a couple more of them to
keep in inventory, so a good one is always available.

This is exactly the engineering item that I wish there were more of. It's
fun, it has a useful ability, it doesn't do anything stupid (like blow up in
your face), and the animation/effect is cool and relatively unique.

Now to build myself a goblin rocket launcher and some super-sappers...

Perhaps your paladin should try to grind for this:

I heard it is good for AOE grinding.

It is - my paladin still uses it when soloing at 70. The damage isn't much,
but everything that hits you has a chance to get the spores, so it's just
one more piece of passive damage to add to the pile. *

Force Reactive Disk is better for AOE grinding than Petrified Lichen
Guard, but for normal use PLG is probably better (lower repair cost)
and it does nice single target damage.

Definitely. That shield is my planned upgrade from the Skullflame shield that
I'm using now. The force reactive disk is a fun distraction, but the
durability just isn't there to make it practical (unless I build a good
number of them).

Back in the days Pre-BC, one of our tanks always kept two of these, and
used them on the bug gauntlets in AQ40. It made that section completely
mindless to tank, and the more mobs he picked up, the more nearly
impossible it was to pull them off, so you could AOE like crazy.

As you say, the big problem is that it breaks very, very fast - it would
last about 4 minutes before breaking. *
