Hi All;

I'm a Comcast internet user and I'm also a Norton's Anti-Virus user for
years. I've been more or less satisfied with Norton's. It's rarely caused me
problems when gaming over the years. Comcast recently started offering
free McAfee Ver.10 (2006) Anti-virus, McAfee Firewall and McAfee Security
Center. My Norton's subscription has just expired and I'm considering
switching over to the free McAfee stuff. However, when I research McAfee I
don't see a whole lot of good about it.

My question to Comcast users: Have any of you switched over from some other
anti-virus software or more particularly from Nortons to the free McAfee
stuff? If so, how do you like in? Does it cause you any pain and suffering
when playing WoW? What is your opinion on McAfee's ability to stop virus's,
worms, trojan horses, etc..etc..?

Any thoughts and suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time.

I had McAfee on my PC and ditched it, told my sister to do the same. It
can kill performance. It's on my work PC too. In all cases when I
selected certain directories, (Archives seem to be a killer) it used
100% of the CPU for minutes while it went basaltic with the scanning!!

I use AVG Free and never had any problems. Personally I would get that,
ZoneAlarms as a firewall, Spybot and Adware. There are some of the best
around and all have free version you can use.

That's the exact combination I had for three years. AVG was Superb!!
And ZoneAlarm too. Now ZoneAlarm Pro has an Anti-spyware feature as
well. I run Adaware and Spybot every couple of weeks and never have
more than a suspiscious cookie to deal with.

I did just switch to Nicro Trend Anti-virius and have had absolutle NO
problems what-so-ever thus far.

I subscribe to McAfee's online for the anti-virus and firewall. I pay $$ to
subscribe.

Wave Broadband / cable modem - power user 6-8 mb bandwidth account:

I hang my WoW PC off the dmz in my firewalled router and port forward all
the ports WoW requires.
that might be redundant, but as long as I think it is faster - who cares.

Norton's from the beginning, and now - can cause hardware errors with game
machines. I'd say if
Norton's doesn't bother your PC, then you really haven't got a leading edge
game machine. imho.

I leave my McAfee's online firewall in tight security with WoW granted
server access.
I do disable the McAfee's anti-virus when playing WoW , however; i don't
really have to.
WoW has started adding anti virus checking to the game software (front
end)(client).

If you can get McAfee's free - then imho use it. I also have a registered
copy of lavasoft's adaware "Ad-Aware SE Professional"
this locks the registry from being written to - how cool is that.

anyway these two PC's get 70-90 frames in IF at max IF shilling - guild
begging's and /4 wtb/wts. Higher frames (120-140) in "contested lands", with
McAfee's configured as indicated right here in this news post jack.
http://www.smokeypoint.com/My_PC.htm

I haven't had one virus seek in the past 34 years i've been playing WoW.

heh - okay i lied about the last one.
( i am 23 and WoW is a little over a year (with McAfee's)- I also use same
config for FFXI (with McAfee's))
except FFXI don't need no stinking dead ti kate ted ports.

McAfee's flags and jumps right on any detected virus attempt. Want to test
that ? put outlook.exe in your "user watch list"
That is a puzzler - why does Outlook pop up at the most unusual times ?
heh - it doesn't anymore - took about twenty times
of McAfee's stopping it before Outlook stopped it's foolishness. huh huh
Bill ??

hope this helps,

I am a Comcast Internet user and I also use McAfee. But I tend to turn it
off while I play games. The time or two I haven't I hadn't noticed any
performance issues on my desktop (a P4 3.0GHz w/HT, 1.5GB PC3200 RAM).

I didn't know Comcast was offering McAfee for free. I'll have to look into
that. :-)

I was also a former Norton's user and I have to say I wouldn't touch
Norton's with a 10-foot pole these days. Zone Alarm is another program I
wouldn't use if someone paid me. AVG Anti-Virus is a good program I used
on my work laptop before I was contracted to another company for a year and
given a company laptop. They use McAfee, too.
