Guild Wars 2 went free a couple of days ago, so I took a look at it.

On the plus side, I really like the great deal of customization I could
make to my character's appearance.

On the negative side... ugh, everything else.

I played the original Guild Wars, Lewis. I found it socially
isolating. Now that may be because I was an early adaptor, but I'm not
surpprised GWII is 'free'

vetred, on the STeamwheedle server

Hmm, think my bf tried that a while back, can't recall anything about
it though. I've always found so much in WoW that I never found the
need to look at any other MMOs, there just isn't enough time in the
day. However with WoD being, well, boring (for me), I think I need
something to fill the gap till Legion. Vanilla WoW could work for a
bit, but I'm waiting for a newly announced server to launch, and
that'll be a few weeks away yet.

D3 is fun for the moment, but I was thinking of looking at other MMOs,
maybe LOTRO seeing as I love Tolkien's work (but that might be a
downside if it doesn't match up to my mental images - I dislike the
films for that reason, they just feel "wrong"...), might look into GW2
then and see what it's all about.

Hehe oh dear. That said, if you hate everything about it... that means
it might be perfect for me! ;-)

Maybe. Lots of cutscenes and having to listen to dialog.

I'd play it over Diablo III, but that's not saying much.

I prefer reading to listening but sounds promising... ;-)

Lol. Out of interest, is your opinion of D3 recent, or based on how it
was at launch? It's almost a new game now, greatly improved in
playability, if you've not played it since it launched, they changed
most of what was annoying in 2.0 and have kept improving since. You
can skip all the boring story stuff now and just play adventure mode
instead ;-)

I've never liked the Diablo series since it is far too much of a "how
fast can you click" game.

Yeah, if you didn't like Diablo2, you're almost certainly not going to
like Diablo 3, even as much as it's been improved since launch. It's
still mostly about engaging in wholesale slaughter to find better gear
so you kill more and kill it faster. As an intellectual exercise, you
can try out different ways of killing, seeing how well you can do
using builds that aren't the most optimised but it's still all about
the killing. ; )

Hehe yeah, I think it's miles better than at launch, but end of the
day, it's about slaughtering monsters for loot :-)

As a refugee from WoW I loaded and played LOTRO for a while. My
impressions are that the graphics are pretty good, the story line rather
clunky and the interfacing with various in game characters rather poor.

It also seems to have an insistence on each playing character adapting
his or her character by means of various learning curves that involve
trades or professions in a way that I found odd.

Maybe I'm not being fair to the game, but after WoW I found it very
strange.

A game you could have a look at is "The secret world". Free to play and
very involved and totally different to WoW or LOTRO.
I'm trying to play it now and it's driving me nuts.

Well, I guess at least it's trying to not be a WoW clone, I guess,
sounds... different lol.

I'll have a look at that one, see what it's like. First glance over
the Wiki entry suggests it's pretty different indeed! I think I'm more
interested in traditional fantasy kind of settings but I'll read some
more and see :-)
