I just did last boss in Tempest Keep today as I'm farming the Ashes of
Al'ar mount. All adds were dead and I only had the boss left. Suddenly
this birdie appeared at my right side fighting me while Kael'thas
Sunstrider was up in the air untargetable. This was very unexpected so
I killed the bird and then the boss. When the boss died I saw an egg on
the ground where the bird died. It disappeared in front of my eyes. So
I looted the boss and still no mount.

I've checked wowhead several times now and nothing tells me about this
extra add. Have I misunderstood something? Should I have looted the
egg before I killed the boss? Or?

I farmed the instance for about 6 months to get the mount. The add and
its eggs appear, and are fairly easy to kill. It's irrelevant to getting
the mount, which drops only from Kael'thas (sp?). I used a fairly complex
strategy to separate the 4 mini-bosses and kill them one by one (its in
the wowhead comments).

One of the key elements is to fight the boss and mini-bosses in the
corridors, where they can't knock you back or up in the air as easily.

I pick up the staff of disintegration, place a protection field on
myself and kill the adds. I will still be hit by a knockback at the
start of the fight, but theyre all dead within the next few seconds
prolly because im ranged. Quite easy.
The fight was much harder until I took a closer look on that legendary
staff. :)

Heh, you're lucky then, I use that staff and it still takes me ages,
just don't have high enough dps I guess, I can only manage it with the
separating method, and even then, it tends to be hard work. That said,
having seen your main, you have higher lvl gear than my main and
you're a dps spec, I'm a healer spec, might explain the difference ;-)

I also find the staff doesn't always have much effect, I still get
cc'd even when I do use it, helps a bit, but it doesn't rpevent
*everything* which is annoying!

I farm the boss on my mage and warlock.
My mage's dot (nether tempest, instant cast) is quite powerful so I just
dot them a single time while I tab through them.
My destro lock just spam incinerate and conflagrate. Incinerate's cast
time wont break even if I'm knockbacked in the middle of a cast and
conflagrate is instant. Profit. :)
But I can imagine my ele shammy will have a more difficult time if I go
there with that char.

Maybe a dumb question. But do you remember to target yourself when you
use the staff's ability? :) I'm not completely sure, but I think the
buff wont work if you dont target yourself.

Lucky, I get them down alright but spend so much time CC'd that it
takes a while...

No, I macro it to my spells and it does work on myself - I get a buff
icon anyway, just doesn't actually do a whole lot! Still get
disorientated, knockbacked, stunned... sigh. It works on Kael (didn't
even know he did CC stuff till I took it off to try and get some
better dps by using a decent weapon lol) but not the adds, or at
least, only some of the time (it's better when i use it than if I
don't, but some get through).

Odd. I equip the staff (my gear gives my plenty of spellpower anyway),
put the buff on myself and it works like a charm in the fight with the
four minibosses.
