I already have a 'lock pet - usually a VoidLord if
I'm solo questing, as a personal tank.

I bumped my Barracks up to level 2, and now I get
a 'bodyguard' type companion. Very welcome!

My trinkets can both manifest (low level) dps companions
during combat.

Finishing off the Auchindon quest line recently,
I found I had two spectral ogres manifesting during
combat as well.

So, my toon was fighting in a party of 7 at times. It
got to the point where it was difficult to loot due to
the crowd.

Haha yeah, it's a bit crazy at times! Very useful for me as a healer
though, I made upgrading my barracks a priority to get my bodyguard,
as while I solo just fine with strong gear, it's a little painful with
weak gear, the bodygaurd is exactly what I need :-) Although I wish I
could make him stand somewhere not right in my face while I'm trying
to do jumping puzzles, it's a little hard to see where you're going
when an ogre is blocking the view :-P

I can never get the bodyguard to stick around.

Are you doing the thing where you can ask them to come on patrol with
you while in the garrison? As that's different to the full bodyguard
feature - to access the proper bodyguards, have a lvl 2 Barracks, and
assign a follower with the bodyguard trait to it (use the architect
table). Then, they'll be standing outside the building and you can
tell them to join you - they'll stay with you then, at least until
they die, which happens more often than I'd like, wish the UI would
treat them like a pet so I can actually see their healthbar and target
them to heal without having to remember to set focus all the time.

Ah. That was what I was doing wrong then.
