Discussion:
A better set of addons and mods?
(too old to reply)

I'm sure this has been done to death, but I wonder if you guys would
comment on my choices:

Cosmos
Titan Panel
Auctioneer Advanced
Gatherer
Fishing Buddy EBA
AutoGrats
Autoding
LightHeaded
DoubleWide
TomTom

But I can't get map waypoints working in TomTom (conflict with Cosmos?)
and there's a lot of duplication. I took a look at CTMod but couldn't
fathom it.

What do you guys suggest given I want the following the most:

- a map with accurate co-ordinates that remembers where questgivers and
important places are between characters.

- the ability to create my own waypoints in an easy fashion.

- the ability to see friends and guildies on the map and mini-map.

- a better quest log than blizzard's. I'd kill for one with built-in
Thottbot browsing! Does that exist at all?

- empty bag slots shown for each bag.

- better tooltips and info for mobs, items, players, NPCs, etc.

- tracking of resource nodes.

- fishing autocast and records of catches.

- something to make my job as a healer easier (a favourite spec).

I don't care if it's one cohesive package or multiple mods. So long as
they play nice together I don't care. I'd love to hear what the top
players are using and would appreciate hearing about mods outside of my
above expectations. I'm sure I've not even begun to think of all the
possibilities :-)

TIA,
Jamie Kahn Genet

P.S. I'm on a Mac so no .exe's please. Only zipped files I can install
manually.

Ok I'll give up my list of addons to see if it'll help. I personally
never get UI clashes and crashes unless I download a bleeding edge
addon update and it breaks and fixes at the same time :P

Any addon listed with an indent is part of the previous one i.e. needs
it to work.

TitanPanel - Many addons, many widgets, all useful. :D
-Recount - DPS meter and recounts of deaths, CC breaks etc etc etc.
Everything but the kitchen sink.

Mobinfo - Great addon with updated database for health of mobs,
bosses, NPC's, their functions and abilities,
-Mobhealth including drops, role and class. EVERY
VENDOR IS A PALADIN! :P

Deadly Boss Mods - Timers for BG's, flag/node caps and boss abilities.
Nearly invaluable but useless when you know a fight by heart.

Cartographer - Map mod. Full map reveal. Integrates well with Gatherer
and CTMod and can memorize locations of NPC's if you set it to. VERY
useful for waypoints as well. Can be setup to show friends, guildies
and party members on main/minimap if you wish.

CTMod - Full package. I have ViewPoint and Mapmod off though because
Mapmod doesn't play nice with Cartographer or Atlas with the co-
ordinate addon. MapNotes is included for functionality.

AtlasLoot - Just this alone since Cartographer > Atlas. More
functionality plus FogLight widget = <3

PallyPower - Nuff said. Controls Pally Greater blessings for groups
and raids.

Grid - Easier healing group/raid addon ever. My guild swears by this.
I use it sparingly since I don't really heal any more but it's
workable.

FishingBuddy - Well you know this one. Not really a big fan of it
since I still like to do things manually in terms of Fishing but it's
great. www.elsangling.com is the Bible on all things Fishing
profession.

SpamMeNot - Well yeah. No more OMG BUY GOLD/PLZ RUN ME/PLZ BOOST
whispers.

If you don't use these, I wonder how you make money :P

Gatherer - Best database on all gatherable nodes in game. From Barrels
Of Milk to Kingsblood and Fel Lotus: add this addon plus the database
from www.gathereraddon.com and you've got gas.

Enchantrix - adds percentage based gather counts of possible
disenchants from items and even adds a Trade Barker function for
announcing what enchants you have.

Auctioneer

Omen - Threat meter.

OneBigBag - turns all your bags into a ginormous one. Bit overwhelming
if you work with a small monitor but for packrats like me: gold. :D

www.wowace.com has an installable package for Mac as well I believe if
you wish to get constant UI mod updates.

Otherwise, check out WoWMatrix. I now SWEAR by this addon because it
keeps everything in check, downloads updates and even tracks UI bug
errors for you!

I am not going to post the list of addons as it reaches 287 at the moment.

Notable ones are lightheaded, aloft, auctioneer advanced, gatherer,
cartographer and nquest.

I have only just found this and it is bloody marvellous. MacAceUpdater
and WoWAceUpdater only update the ace addons. WoWMatix updates all the
others. There are some that haven't found their way onto the list yet,
but they do get added from time to time.

Using the Mazzle Interface, I do get a lot of errors after each patch.
WoWMatrix has slowed these down to a couple that are caused by mods
that have been rewritten for the mazzle installation, namely tinytip
and framexml.

Personally, wherever possible, I'm using Ace based addons, as they are
(reputedly) more memory efficient and - for me the main reason - easily
updated using WowAceUpdater.
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
Cosmos
Don't know in detail what it all contains.
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
Titan Panel
Fubar
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
Auctioneer Advanced
I use Auctioneer Classic but that is a matter of taste
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
Gatherer
Cartographer and its plugins
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
Fishing Buddy EBA
Haven't used fishing buddy since 2.0 - I just can't get it working and by
now, I can live without it
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
AutoGrats
Autoding
No idead what those two do in detail though I can guess by their names.
Don't use anything like it, so I can't make suggestions
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
LightHeaded
DoubleWide
I use those, too.
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
TomTom
Cartographer covers most of it, I'm not using TomTom as I don't really need
the related feature in LightHeaded to click on coords to add waypoints.
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
But I can't get map waypoints working in TomTom (conflict with Cosmos?)

- a map with accurate co-ordinates that remembers where questgivers and
important places are between characters.
Cartographer does this and much more.
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
- the ability to create my own waypoints in an easy fashion.
I'm not sure if it is a cartographer plugin or if I have a special waypoint
addon but I can do /way <x,y> and /noway
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
- the ability to see friends and guildies on the map and mini-map.
Cartographer does this with the proper plugin (at least on the map, not sure
about minimap)
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
- a better quest log than blizzard's. I'd kill for one with built-in
Thottbot browsing! Does that exist at all?
I use FastQuest and DoubleWide.
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
- empty bag slots shown for each bag.
There is a Fubar plugin to show total free slots, I have no need to see it
for each bag and don't know if there is an addon that does it
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
- better tooltips and info for mobs, items, players, NPCs, etc.
MobInfo2
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
- tracking of resource nodes.
Cartographer does this with the proper plugins
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
- fishing autocast and records of catches.
I have no need for this anymore. I cust using a key binding and am not
really interested in recording my catches.
Post by Jamie Kahn Genet
- something to make my job as a healer easier (a favourite spec).
I don't heal so I'm not that experienced but from what I hear a combination
of Grid and Clique seems to be what most serious healers use.

All addons I listed above work nicely on my machine (I'm using roughly 180+
of them).

I'm not sure whether there is a Mac-version of WoWAceUpdater or something
similar, but that is one of the nice things about Ace addons, the tool
checks my versions against those on their website (or even SVN repository?)
and lets me update them with one key press.

I'm sure there are Mac users who can answer this.

I had a quick look at it but it did not seem to work so I threw it out again
without investing a lot of time to get it running, as 80% of my addons are
covered by WowAceUpdater anyway.

But thanks for the information.

I installed wowmartix last night first time, I didnt have to set up anything
not even 1 thing. I installed it, it immediatly saw all my addons and I just
pressed update all and I can say it did a great job, I never had my addons
so updated ^^ (I use wowaceupdater for most).

I remembered your post when I installed it cause you said it was hard to

Well, I went back tonight and downloaded the latest version of WoWMatrix and
got it to run instantly. No clue what went wrong last time.

I've set all the Ace addons to ignore as I somehow "trust" the WowAceUpdater
more, as it seems to show more consistent version numbers for the Ace
addons.

There is only one tiny flaw, I would like to see from which source it
updates the addons but I have not found a way to display that info.

Other than that, it looks neat, I'll see how it holds up.

Cosmos
I really wouldn't use any addon packages like Cosmos anymore. Chances
are that you have lots of features that you don't even use and you
could get a much lighter solution by turning it off and seeing what
you are missing and get individual addons to do that. A lot of people
like packages too but it's up to you.

Either Grid and Clique or Healbot are good healing addons. I use Grid
and Clique myself.

Cartographer + it's modules and Grid + it's modules are available at
www.wowace.com/files. You'll need to Google for Clique and
QuestHelper.

QuestHelper doesn't come with the comments as LightHeaded does. So it does
not contain comments and suggestions of players.

What it does contain, is locations for a lot of the quests in the game, so
it can tell you where to go for a quest. It also calculates the most
efficient order in which to do and hand in quests, so you can minimise the
time lost in travelling.

- something to make my job as a healer easier (a favourite spec).
I use PitBull unit frames. For raid unit frames you can make them
quite small. I used to use Grid, but found managing two different unit
frame mods kind of a hassle (and Grid doesn't show enough info in
5-mans for my taste -- I like to know what the other party members are
casting, for example).

I use an Ace mod called Click2Cast to set up click binds for various
healing spells... Ctr-Click on a unit frame casts Renew, Shift-Click
casts Flash Heal, Shift-Ctr-Click does Greater heal, etc. This lets me
cast heals and cleanses on team mates with a single "chord", making me
a more responsive healer than I could be using a select-keypress
sequence.

The downside to Click2Cast is the fairly primitive interface for
setting up the bindings. Clique has a *much* nicer interface that is
elegantly linked into the spellbook interface. The reason I use
Click2Cast instead is because C2C is an Ace addon, and uses fewer
system resources than Clique.

I'm not sure if that's what he meant. I recall seeing an addon once that put
in comic like "bang" graphics when you crit etc. The OP might look for this.
Unfortunately I can't recall its name.
Comix?

Exactly, that's the one I had stumbled across. Don't know if it is what the
OP has been looking for, but still...

I'd be quite interested in this if you have it uploaded anywhere? I
love random facts and figures :)

I'd also like an addon that tracks how long you spent on each level, how
much of each level was spent in a rested state etc... It would be nice
if there was some way to automatically filter out time now spent
questing, but I can't think of a good way to do that.

Don't suppose you fancy writing one or know of one that already does
this? :)

get it from http://www.ursbeeli.ch/m_addons.shtml

I don't know how you would decide whether you're questing or not, so at
least that information would be hard to determine.

I had to ditch this addon due to a few annoying features.

1. You couldn't update a set once you got rid of an item in it. You
need to update the set before you sell an item otherwise you'd have to
delete and re-create the set. Unfortunately, enchanting, gemming and
adding armour patches all count as losing an item and getting a new
one. Very annoying.

2. The mount addon remembered the set that you wore before you
mounted up and then reapplied that set when you unmounted. I like to
put default trinkets in my sets and then change them with trinketmenu
as I decide another would be better. My default trinkets would always
be equiped when I dismounted. Less annoying but an irritation all the
same.
FuBar_LocationFu Zone information
Does this work properly for you? Recently, the option to put it in
the bar (rather than as a minimap button) is not present so I have to
hover over it to see what sub zone I'm in.
FuBar_PetInFu           Pet information
I might have to look into that one for my hunter. I assume that it
gives pet hapiness as something to tell you about. I have Pitbull
which changes the colour of the pet health bar according to happiness
but I'm colourblind and the colour difference between happy green and
content yellow is not enough for me to be sure which it is currently
so I feed him too much. (he's getting a bit fat :P)
MBB                     Collects minimap buttons in one button
This looks interesting - I hate minimap buttons. :)
Talented                Talent point interface supporting profiles
This addon is fantastice in my opinion. It had one flaw in that it
wouldn't load the Talented_Data whenever a new patch came out even
though that patch might not have affected any talents. Then I
discovered the option to turn this off and it became almost perfect.
WitchHunt               Show enemy spells being cast
I'm thinking about dropping this addon now. It's almost useless in
BGs because the range is too large. I can be at a node in AB and
WitchHunt is scrolling messages by and I can see that I'm completely
alone. :( It's getting so that I ignore those messages so I may as
well not have them as a distraction.

I've long ago decided that two normal trinkets plus the riding one is enough
hassle for me, so I don't have any need to switch around trinkets after
dismounting.

However, you can define a "mount" set an a "dismount" set. What if you
define your "dismount" set to include all slots *except* the trinket slots.
This way, when dismounting, ClosetGnome would not touch any of your trinkets
and you could leave this job to TrinketMenu...

Yes, it does show loyalty and happiness, but as far as I know you can't show
it on Fubar, it's only visible in the tooltip when you hover over the
"PetInfo" slot on the bar. I guess that would be ok for you to check whether
it's happy or content but you would need to consciously check for it.

I have lots of trinkets :) I love the trinket queue feature of
trinket menu along with a macro to always try to use the top trinket
on my main attack button. My rogue has three +AP on use trinkets that
cycle round at the end of each fight.

I don't have a class that has only one set. At the very least I have
a normal set and a pvp set. My priest has pvp, healing and dps and my
druid has pvp (feral), pvp (healer), dps, healing and two tanking sets
(and is short on bag and bank space :P).

It doesn't matter though as I really like Outfitter now that I've
switched to it.

I'm surprised to find someone that uses it really. I only did the one
release plus bug fixes and it was because someone made the mod
suggestion on the wowace forums and I thought that it would be
interesting to do.

I never use it myself although I've thought that it would be useful in
those raid encounters that need you to keep a certain distance from
other players. I'd find it easier to read than DBM which just tells
me who to move away from - I don't know how far away they are from me
and which direction I need to move to go further away (I do know how
much health they have though :P)

I've thought about updating it to detect inside/outside better based
on suggestions on the forum and some people suggested adding multiple
circles which I could also do.

Hehe, I tried it when you mentioned it here quite some time ago. It's not
something I use a lot but every once in a while it's useful, especially with
my hunter to see how far away certain tracking dots are.

And as it is slim and unobtrusive, I just kept it for those occasions.

While the inside/outside thing would be nice, I'm not sure I would want
multiple circles, as I'm afraid it might be "too much" information in a
small space...

Hmm. I can. :) If you got a rid of an item from a set, I usually just
doubleclick on the set and it asks to update/add it. If you don't change
the name it'll just update the set. Now the item slot in question is
circled with a yellow color to indicate a missing item, just add a new
piece to it and right click it back to green (or red if you don't want
anything in it.) This is somewhat confusing way of updating compared to
Outfitter or ItemRack though, but still works when you get used to it.

And for counting differently gemmed and enchanted item a different piece
it's actually very good feature. Occasionally for example I have 2 same
pieces, one gemmed for dps and one for tanking for example and it's
good that it can differentiate between them.

Hmm, if there's a difference between PetInFu and PetInfoFu, then I
don't know about that one. I've used PetInfoFu and with it you can
see in it's tooltip everything you would really need to know about
your pet and for the FuBar part it can show for example your pet's
happiness level in numbers and I think for example the experience
level and gain if you want.

Maybe that's a recent feature then. It certainly didn't do that when
I used it. I'm using Outfitter now and I much prefer it's UI so I'll
stick with that.

I can see how it would be a good feature and the only reason why I
didn't like it was because of the bug I mentioned. I've yet to have
more than one of the an item gemmed differently so I wouldn't know if
that works on Outfitter but I have had one item multiple times with
only one being soulbound and it didn't try to equip a non-soulbound
item.

Yeah, I know. It used to work but now doesn't. I wonder if it is a
bug in Fubar as I've looked in LocationFu and I can't find any code to
do that part (as I'd expect - I'd expect it to be in the Fubar bit of
code). There is also a bug with Omen where it won't go in the bar
either - that also used to work. I might just look for all lua files
in my WTF folder and delete them. Most of them are information addons
anyway and won't take much re-configuration to fix.

It's annoying that LocationFu isn't working for me as it's almost
useless as a minimap button.

Turns out to be user error. When FuBar 2 came out they named it
FuBar2 you needed a mod to pretend to be FuBar so that addons that
plugged into FuBar would work with it. I still had that mod but when
they released FuBar 3 they named the folder FuBar but I didn't get it
because I already had a FuBar folder.

So, the short story is that I had Fubar 2 when I needed FuBar 3 for
three of my addons.

Factionizer Tells you how to improve reputation
Out of interest, did you manage to fix the taint issues on that addon? I
loved it but had to stop using it some time back because my warlock never
got a petbar in BGs :-/
As I have never had a taint issue with it, I don't really have much luck
fixing it. Why don't you try the latest version and let me know here, if
it's fixed or not. Maybe, with some direct discussion (we can take that to
e-mail) I'll be able to fix it with your help.

Cheers

Will give that a shot soon, still trying to diagnose a persistent
intermittent addon problem I've had ever since 2.4, so I'm keeping to a
bare minimum of mods now, but if I ever get confident that I've fixed that
issue I'll test Factioniser again :-)

- a map with accurate co-ordinates that remembers where questgivers and
important places are between characters.
1) Cartographer, and it's multitude of additional addons
[cartographer_guild for guild tracking, haven't looked for friends -
although, guildies will have to have the addon installed as well]

2) Lightheaded [might need the alliance/horde data folders to view the
WoWhead comments, not exactly thotbott... but I prefer wowhead as of
recent] or Uberquest [very nice, customizable quest tracking display]
Unfortunately you can't use them both at once. I've just recently
swapped to Lightheaded and resorted to using the default blizzard
quest tracking system [simpleminimap lets me move it where I want it]

3) Onebag

4) TinyTip + Informant
