Devilsaur Eye or Tooth?

Seems the Tooth is better for a BM spec, but does the large number (1400
critical strike rating) affect the actual damage done on that attack, or
is it basically just a guaranteed critical strike? In other words, would
it be a different trinket if it were 800 or 2000 critical strike rating
instead? I always figured a critical strike is just 2x damage no matter
what.

The Eye looks really good too, but I hear that it's more easily
replaceable later than the Tooth.

1400 means that a critical strike is guaranteed at level 60 even if the pet
would have zero crit chance itself. At level 70 the crit isnt guaranteed.

AFAIR the buff lasts till a crit, doesn't it? So it is basically
guaranteed that it does crit (unless you don't attack), what is not
guaranteed is that it's the very next hit that does crit.

I chose the eye for my BM spec hunter. Mainly because the tooth
looked pretty useless unless you were BM spec and I wanted a useful
trinket no matter what spec I might choose later (I chose it before
TBC - I wouldn't have replaced it with anything my 61 Priest or 62
Druid has found yet although there is a similar quest reward trinket
that I would use at the same time)

After using the eye you are looking at about 11% increase in your DPS
for 20 seconds.

After using the tooth you are looking at a double damage pet attack
but you will also get Frenzy (Pet gets 30% increase in attack speed
for 8 seconds) and Ferocious Inspiration (+3% damage for your party
for 10 seconds) too. I don't know exactly how that affects DPS but it
looks like +33% for your pet for 8 seconds and +3% for you and your
party for 10 seconds. That's a more fuzzy benefit because your pet
might have critted on that attack anyway and it might also crit within
the first seconds of battle if it doesn't on the first attack.

Hmm, that sounds pretty good. It seems like the Eye might even be better
for BM spec, because it plays to their "weakness" (not as much DPS as
MM). The Tooth only enhances an already strong pet, and a single
critical strike doesn't seem worth it. Yes, Frenzy will proc, but I'm
not even sure I'll have room to take Ferocious Inspiration.

Uhm, nothing + 11% is still somehow.. nothing.

If you pick the Eye, then you should have the Rapid Killing talent and
Improved Aspect of the Hawk.
If you pick the Tooth, then you should have Frenzy and Ferocious
Inspiration.

Now delete all the talents above you don't have and the item with the
most talents left is the one you pick. If it's a tie, do a /random.

Since the Tooth is now 100% instead of 1400 rating, it's a bit
better. It's also completely unique. You will replace the Eye very
quickly in TBC. You'd probably replace the Tooth as well, but you'll
not find anything else to match its situational utility.
